So is he playing real drums live on that track? I recognize his chops from Beep Street. I think the way he did the bafflingly intricate drums on Beep Street was to play real drums in real time, then slice it up and speed up the tempo - or was that before beat slicing tools were common? Me do not know. |

Haha! I think it is deffo live drums on iambic 9 and chopped beats on beep street. I think he didn't even move on to computers until go plastic anyway i remember reading that somewhere. |

I find it hard to imagine someone doing the drums on Beep Street without playing it live then slicing it to bits and speeding it up, computers or not - it's too fast for just playing and too live and complex and subtle for just programming. Someone was saying that he cut up a James Brown "Soul Pride" drumloop to make it, but I dunno - I've worked with sliced loops and it's impossible to get that kind of liveliness and variety out of only a few bars of material. The motherfucker is deep, isn't he? |

I will try and dig out an old iterview i read that was done at the time of that album coming out and he said that he programmed all the beats on a drum machine so i am guessing that is what he did beep street on too. |

That site is a great resource! Shit, if that's the only source material for the drums, he must have spent like a week or two programming the variations. Maybe once he had the hits sliced he mapped them to keys on a midi keyboard and played it "live" at half or 1/3 speed... I've seen people do amazing things with drum hits mapped to keys - especially if they know drums. I'm so fucking sick of clicking a mouse on a grid to make drum tracks. It's slow and stiff and there has to be a better way. |
