And we see systems like this in nature all the time.
Your own body is comprissed of living cells - Each one is a single separate entity from its neighbours - On a very low level of existance.
And if they had the ability to think and reason, I'm sure none of them would rationally believe they all comprised a greater "whole", especially if they could attribute and break down everything in their lives as mechanical/logical processes.
But you know perfectly well these millions of separate entities support a higher level of intelligence.
The lines are blurred when you look at things like termites nests - Where the individual termites comprise "nest/hive consiousness" - With the queen as the reproductive organs, the workers as the hands and feet, etc.....

Oh time does exist - It's just not linear in the way we perceive it in the middle dimensions.

what the "self" is really depends on how you believe you originated. if you are to believe that you, or all of mankind was created by a fully cognisant god of some sort, then you'd be a design, a concept. if you are to believe that there is no "higher power" then you'd really be nothing more than an random occurence.. .basically a product of a system of orderliness. you might consider the two to be nearly one in the same.. but you'd think a god could "see" the future in a way that a chaotic system of "cause and effect" couldn't..
but really.. how do you define (a) god? and how would that really be different than a seemingly random system of conditions and conventions?

I still do not know what cognitive process has to do with existance of something. I dislike Descartes because he stressed his thoughts to prove god's existance. His philosophy is like a world seen through different shades of light. Ideas are good, then religion thing screws it up completely. I wish he was born in different time and in different environment.
