His music, of course, his symbol, his album art, his
mystique, his lies, his attitude, his track names.
Everything. His entire persona as an artist.

The most important thing I realized about him (which I felt
early on, but was really proved to me after a long AFX
hiatus and lots of Autechre listening) is just how natural
he is. I think he must be incredibly intelligent, and
simply anjoys making music, and never forces the act. If
you look at not only the huge stylistic variety of his
output, but also it's huge emotional range (humor, anger,
fear, warmth, seriousness), and the fact that he can do
_all_ of these at such a ridiculously high level, I think
you can't argue with his ability. Granted I don't listen to
him very much and haven't in a while, it is unarguably
impressive.

When I first noticed (momentarily after my introduction) how
deliberate autechre's development and internal musical
structure is, I was very impressed, but now I think I
appreciate AFX's more organic expansion (though, as I said,
I don't listen to him as much).

I am not at all surprised he is pleasant to meet in person.
He's just a good guy enjoying life, and there happens to be
lots of good music as a bi-product. He would probably be
good at anything he set himself to do.

I guess I just don't hear it.

I've never been really impressed by Aphex. to me it's okay,
but a lot of it sounds very dated by now.

his melodies don't do much for me and his sounddesign leaves
a lot to be asked for.

Aphex seems like a guy who likes the energy of rock and
roll, (even if he doesn't know it) and likes to translate
that to electronic music. He has a very firm grasp of
building songs like regular rock music. Intro, bridges,
rests, build ups. Keeping the ear interested, creating
hooks..etc...Match that with excellent control of his
sounds. It's really the whole package I like. He has admited
to comming from a purely emotional angle. He knows it's not
just about the music. I've just been a devoted fan for
about a decade ,now. I truely like it all. There's maybe
just one track per album I don't like. I can't say that
about anyone else. When drukqs was comming out and there was
all these fakes. I dl'ed a few and new immediately it wasn't
him. All I have to hear is one bar of his music and I know
instantly. A true master.

the funny thing is that, i couldn't tell what Aphex Twin
sounds like.
and i never said to myself "this sounds like Aphex Twin".

he's so polymorphous he's amorphous.
or almost.

I'm glad he hasn't released his supposed new material. The
voracious consumers of culture don't deserve to digest it in
two months. com2daffy rdj and windliojf are so elegant and
crafted so as to warrant eternal replay value.

Sometimes I compare music by different people to see what's
"better"... and recently right after listening to noise
unit's drill, it sort of makes aphex's material sound
somewhat less dimensional by comparison. Just the thickness
and oddness of the sound used. But always when I hear any of
the 3 albums mentioned above after not hearing them after
awhile, I instantly resonate with them and feel they are the
best musical constructions possible, ignoring for a moment
that all music is completely pointless...

"very similar to eachother, yes."

well, never change a winning team is what they say.
Why would he change his style every album? That's kind of
like asking Van Gogh to do a Rembrandt because his paintings
were all done in the same style. Really doesn't make any
sense. Richard has succesfully created a unique sound that
is a part of him as an artist and like a certain style of
painting it's either you like it or you don't. Some people
forget how hard it is to achieve the status he now enjoys
because of his refusal to change drastically. All those great
artists that will be remembered have more or less stayed
true to their original style, perhaps becoming more vague
and obscure as they progress but nevertheless not losing the
heart of their style. That's exactly to me what marks a
great artist.
Unless you think Madonna is a great artist (and not a
go-with-the-flow-kinda-hoe) of course then we're done
talking.

and what if you are of the opinion that he is not "a winning
team"?

at least some more progression would make it a bit more
interesting, but no.

Funnily, he was quoted in a recent interview saying he has
such a varied sound because he switches software so much.
First, I wonder how he sees himself. Second, yeah, it was an
interview. Third, it always sounds aphex. Whether he nows it
or not. He follows his own ear I guess.

I love Aphex Twin, i wish he released more music. His music
posesses a certain quality, an element that just says
"geeeeeeeeenius", that I don't find in many other artists,
as much as i might like them.

i think there are lots of aphexes in this world.

offline Exaph from United Kingdom on 2005-12-06 06:58 [#01794479]

Mike Paradinas said last night that Aphex once said to him
"I dont think theres anyone who enjoys making music than I
do" And I think that is evident.

Anyone who thinks he is dependant on software I urge to
listen to SAW85-92 or the Analords. I'm sorry but are there
fuck lots of aphexes in the world - if only! Sneakattack
makes a very good point, and I would also like to argue here
that he DOES put out a lot of music and with incredible
consistency. Also, if you think its samey qrtr I recommend
you listen to Drukqs again, or point me to an artist with
more of a diverse sound.

Anyone who isnt touched by the melody (including its warm
analog sound) in say, Nanou2 or Alberto Balsalm or Hexagon
or Xtal (etc), must be a cyborg or something(!). I think
maybe some dont think about the fact that those analog
sounds, melodies, and drums are programmed lovingly with
labour - not generated by new software
