Venetian Snares, definitely.

I also agree with plaid and aphex to some extent.

The Bro.

Anyway.

I would none are overrated. They're rated accordingly to
their fan base. If you don't like them but everyone else
does you would say they were overrated.
Although some artists build up a certain degree of idol
status and that means some people rate everything they do as
brilliant. Those people are stupid.

BAM!

I disagree, it's not that hard to keep a record deal. Much
harder to get one in the first place.

Pisses me off when I read reviews praising Plaid for
sticking to their original sound whilst the likes of RDJ and
Autechre have progressed. Like that's a good thing?

offline Jarworski from The Grove (United Kingdom) on 2004-04-28 06:45 [#01164193]
Points: 10836 Status: Lurker | Followup to VLetr: #01164182

Plaid actually changed their sound quite a bit for 'Spokes',
in my opinion to their detriment... I hardly ever skip a
Plaid track in Winamp, and since that's including their
entire catalogue as Plaid I think the consistency is
astounding; They do split opinions on this board pretty much
though so fair enough if you don't like them.

U-Ziq I think is hardly overrated. He's a good artist and
has some decent albums but they're never quite as good as
the main players in the genre and his relatively quiet
status reflects that.

I have to say latter Autechre is insanely overrated, it's
practically music by geeks for geeks whereas at least their
earlier stuff was, y'know, enjoyable, not a fucking test of
willpower.

offline VLetr from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-04-28 07:00 [#01164203]

Fair points. I s'pose there is something to be said for
consistency. (Parts in the Post is dull jazz-wank IMO
though)

Yes, recent autechre stuff is a test of willpower at first.
But once you've broken through the threshold, elucidated the
inner logic of the track, it yields almost endless listens.
Although most of my favourite is also very strong
melodically (eg. Gelk on Peel Session 2, Garbage EP).

I do find that I'll give an Ae track the benefit of the
doubt in those early, willpower-testing listens, whereas I
would probably give up on a less rated artist. But then I
know it's worth the effort cos of past performance.

So in conclusion, your will isn't strong enough! :P Nice avy
by the way.

i completely agree with jarworski about awwteckerrr - they
are supremely overrated - though i used to dig them quite a
bit

aside from me out growing their music and not caring for
their new stuff reviews always kiss them square on the ass
because they are autechre - if some newby made their last
two albums no one would make a fuss

AE and Vsnares.

Considering that their music is more of a fucking marathon
than a listening enjoyment.

Fairly obvious I'm not going to agree on this with you from
the off (I love Parts In The Post) - and while succicently
put, your description of conquering Autechre's music only
makes me go "PFFF!" even louder ;D I don't really think the
music is more complex, it's just more abstract, and while it
works for me for certain artists, it doesn't in regards to
Autechre. And believe me - I have tried!

If some unknown made Confield and Draft they would be
rightly trumpeted as miles ahead of their contemporaries by
some parts of the press. However press opinion would be more
representatively split between lovers and haters, as is
opinion on this forum re recent autechre.

As it is, all portions of the press idolise Autechre,
because they're scared of not appearing "cutting edge"
enough. Blame the press, not the artists.

To each his own :>

What's the last Ae album you enjoy? You gotta appreciate the
crispness of production on LP5, every sound perfectly placed
in the mix.

I do agree that Ae are for geeks by the way! I hated
Confield before I started producing my own stuff, totally
impenetrable, but now I find the microsequencing absolutely
dazzling.

LP5 is my cut off point... great album. I dunno, what you
said about an unknown artist releasing an Ae album without
the stigma the press/public have may be true... but I have
winamp on random, and whenever a track off Confield or Draft
comes on that I don't recognise, I immediately wrinkle my
nose just cause it smells bad. And then I look to see what
it is and it's like, "Oh of course! No wonder I hated it!"

I have been searching for a while but I haven't been able to
dig up any artist with rhythmical structures that are even
comparable to the latest autechre shit. Their music is
asphyxiatingly compelling. Hasn't this forum seen enough
later autechre bashing? People; please move on damnit....

Well that does seem a pretty fair assessment. You are
officially free of anti-autechre bias :D

Maybe it's the listening on random? Confield is much better
as a whole listen than as individual tracks. And it *must*
be on headphones.

In fact get your headphones out, right now, and listen to
Confield. Fuck what I said about holistic listening, skip
right to track 3 (Pen Expers). It doesn't get great until a
few minutes in IMO, as that organ rises out of the mix and
starts filling in all the gaps, corroding the beat, decaying
the flow. Beautiful.

I guess artist bashing is a healthy display of human
socialisation. It's just that i've been only 3 months here
and I am already tired of the autechre bashing. I think it
has gone a bit too far. Maybe because I really admire the
object of bashing. Anyway I will never make another mention
of it again.
