Just now, in the chipper, whilst being served by a tasty 14-year old girl, waiting for my Double Jumbo Sausage Supper, I noticed a sign reading "CCTV Camera's Are In Use", and right now I see Thad starting a thread using an apostrophe in a plural, so it must be a sign for me to say:
PLURALS DON'T HAVE APOSTROPHES BEFORE THE 'S', 'ES', 'I', etc!
The apostrophe is never used as "it's" unless it means "it is", NEVER meaning "belonging to it"!

Also, the contraction for 'you are' is "you're", not your.

the apostrophe shows ownership.
Example:
That is Paul's dildo.
That is thad's bicycle.

It's a rather humorous examination of punctuation, or rather the lack of, in modern society. It's by Lynne Truss and it's in a lot of bestsellers lists at the moment (still not out in paperback, I think).

Yes, there is. The title of the book is called "Eats, Shoots and Leaves". Regardless of the fact a panda has almost painted over the ',', the title the book is as I wrote it. It is listed as that and inside the cover, that is how it is written.

He he, none taken, sorry I was so harsh in my rebuttal (I was still on the defensive from my recent equations cock up) ;)
Marlowe: Yes, it is. I very rarely read books like this, I find they tend to either focus too much on the humour (and subsequently impart little knowledge) or too much on the subject (in whic case, they are too dry). This book manages to strike the balance perfectly. The examples are all so entertaining that they stick in your mind and help you to remember the rules.
I really think they ought to set it as an a-level (or maybe even higher set GCSE) text book. It would do the kids a lot of good.

also i remember my brother (but i'm sure he wasn't the only one!), when he barely knew english at all, would put a «'s» at the end of every word or almost (even on singulars!)... = /

It's not 1984, Qey old boy - I don't want to tell you how to thinnnk, but an apostrophe is an apostrophe, and if you're going to use one, then use it in the right place! I have no problem with people who don't use them at all, just those who, because their brains malfunctioned during kindergarten English, fail to realise that plurals have not apostrophes at the climax [...] and so the vicar said "It was like that when I found it!"

actually, the misuse of apostrophes bothers me as well. I remember riding the bus home from elementary school and being annoyed by a hand written sign that read "Please place sunflower seed's in trash."
what's the significance of 1984, btw?

Though I understand this topic, I would like to point out that the apostrophes seem to be one of the harder things about English text.
I myself often write them wrong, not that I don't know it's wrong, but because I simply forget or miswrite.
I strongly suggest using spellcheck on everything posted in here.

the only thing you need to remember is apostrophes are only used to show possession, except in the case of its, as in "the animatronic rabbit wiggled its ears" or as a contraction of two words such as "it's going to be a dreary day today" which is the same thing as "it is going to be a dreary day today.
