::Shortwave Espionage::

For more than 30 years the Shortwave radio spectrum has
been used by the worlds intelligence agencies to transmit
secret messages. These messages are transmitted by hundreds
of “Numbers Stations”.

Shortwave Numbers Stations are a perfect method of
anonymous, one way communication. Spies located anywhere in
the world can be communicated to by their masters via small,
locally available, and unmodified Shortwave receivers. The
encryption system used by Numbers Stations, known as a
“one time pad” is unbreakable. Combine this with the
fact that it is almost impossible to track down the message
recipients once they are inserted into the enemy country, it
becomes clear just how powerful the Numbers Station system
is.

These stations use very rigid schedules, and transmit in
many different languages, employing male and female voices
repeating strings of numbers or phonetic letters day and
night, all year round. The voices are of varying pitches and
intonation; there is even a German station (The Swedish
Rhapsody) that transmits a female child's voice!

One might think that these espionage activities should have
wound down considerably since the official “end of the
cold war”, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Numbers Stations (and by inference, spies) are as busy as
ever, with many new and bizarre stations appearing since the
fall of the Berlin wall.

Why is it that in over 30 years, the phenomenon of Numbers
Stations has gone almost totally unreported? What are the
agencies behind the Numbers Stations, and why are the
eastern European stations still on the air? Why does the
Czech republic operate a Numbers Station 24 hours a day? How
is it that Numbers Stations are allowed to interfere with
essential radio services like air traffic control and
shipping without having to answer to anybody? Why does the
“Swedish Rhapsody” Numbers Station use a small girls
voice?

haha, maybe cos now we have satellites and all that neow
equipment.
tho, large ammount of the codes were unbreakable even by
computers.
btw,try to find the swedish rhapsody in the links...it's
really something to hear, spooky as hell.

We've had them a lot longer than that. My Dad came across a
number station (although he only realised what it was
recently, when I explained what they were) at least 45 years
ago!

the government needed to have an secure channel to be in
touch with their agents.

existance of the numrebs stations...
if you listen to boc closely you'll hear some of the
transmissions being choped by them.
if there wasn't for boc i wouldn't be aware of this stuff.

Well, i got them off of Irdial about 6 months ago, when i
first heard about Numbers stations, only from reading much
entertaining weirdness at Aquarious Records [Found Sounds, Field Recordings, Odditi.... But I just noticed
now the Irdial files are down but there is a link on their
LAZY_catalogue page with a link to the mirror at and
hyperreal. There's some quite interesting files on
there.

u don't have to have expencive radio...if you have shortwave
option on it then you're good to get them, but the best way
is to have an cb radiostation.
still, that's not so easy cos u gotta know how one
operates...
they have their own times when broadcasting the codes, and
nowdays it's like 1 of 100 that u'll came across one,cos
they don't operate so frequently.

My work involves tracking down these stations. We use
special dogs. Of all the numbers, number 2 has the foulest
smell and is also the easiest to find.

Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of
uncertain origin that broadcast streams of numbers, words,
or phonetic sounds. No one knows for sure where their
signals originate or what purpose they serve. The voices
that can be heard on these stations are often those of
children, or are mechanically generated.

Numbers stations appear and disappear continuously, although
some stick to regular schedules. It has been speculated that
these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for
government agencies to communicate with spies "in the
field", using the transmitted codes as a one-time pad
cryptosystem.

well, i've just listened to a few of these. very, very
creepy stuff.

listen here.

Yeah, number stations are amazing, chilling stuff. One of
the best i ever heard was a recording of the last
ceausescu-era romaninan broadcast. The tension was
absolutely amazing. I sample them a lot for my music.

There's a few good links out there if you look, this page
might be a bit outdated but there's some good info and some
non-conet recordings on some linked sites: LAZY_NUMBERS

page you linked to?

Hmmm... i'll have a looksee, maybe i can find where it came
from. If not, i can share it on slsk, it's only a couple of
meg i think (3 minutes or so).

I was making a track using numbers stations tonight; and
I'll be damned! To my ears this sounds like the
sample source for Boc's Gyroscope, without a doubt.

yeah, i think you're right. i just listened to it side by
side, and the resemblance is uncanny. the numbers spoken
aren't the same -- but boc could've just chopped it back up
and rearranged the digits.
