I have recieved this some time ago, as a free thing to review on XLT when it was released (remember that contest?)... and well it took some time but here t is, my review of this pleasant journey into exploratory electronic music.
This rather lenghty - yes value for money! - compilation cd features the best work of 14 experimental electronic artists. The audiobulb label is run by a certain mr Newman, nice lad who met a lot of the artists online on a quest for information, techniques and such (I am sure that many of you know what im on about) Anyway, this sounds like yet another free mp3 label thing, its not. Newman has spent 9 months setting up the label, and the artwork and all is 100 % professional, a lot better than some of the crap rephlex gets away with.
On to the music. The first track one of my favourites. Glitchy, thin breakbeat over beautifully crafted vocal laaaaaah's and other microscopic ant farts. The second track, June by He Can Jog, starts off like something that fits on a lowercase music compilation. Again tiny insects crawl over the microphones, and a drill beat comes it. This cd is pretty listener-rewarding, some tracks really get better after some listens. It inhibits a lot of different moods, from dull sleeping-in-on-the-weekend ambients, to uplifing IDM style tracks such as 'wishing a disease' by 'diagram of suburban chaos', imo the best piece on here. Some tracks sound downright schitzophrenic such as track 4 - and to be quite honest i cant stand this one.
That is the only downside, it sometimes tries to be just experimental for the sake of it, and i can take that to a fair level but the autistic mumbling and sawtooth sweeps dont do it for me on 'we lost him but kept going'
2 or 3 filler tracks, the rest is great stuff. I think i suck at reviewing, but this one is really worth your money - 7.50£ or $12.50 is cheap too compaired to the prices you pay at HMV sometimes :)
My rating: 7.8 out of 10
