It's perfectly normal to feel awkward or embarrassed. Try
not to let that stop you from talking to someone.
Talk to someone in your life that you trust like your mom,
grandmother, school nurse, or a special teacher. Talk to an
adult because someone your own age may not have their facts
straight, even if they think they do.
Choose the right time to talk to your mom. If your mother
seems to be busy, you may want to say, "Mom, there's
something I'd like to talk to you about when you have time."
This way you won't keep putting off a discussion.
Write down your questions before you have a conversation to
help you remember.
You might want to say something like "It's really not easy
for me to talk about this. I feel sort of embarrassed, but
I'd like to try."
You might tell your mother that someone in your class just
got her period or mention the event that got you thinking
about the subject. It could be as simple as some changes
that are taking place in your body or some discussions at
school. Then tell her that you have questions that you'd
like to ask.
You can also start by telling your mother that you've
noticed that your body is changing. Ask her if her body
developed earlier, later, or at the same time as her
friends.
You may want to show your mother a book that you got in your
health class and ask her to go over it with you.
Ask your mother to sit down at the computer with you and
show her this web site.
Remember, keep asking questions until you understand. If
there is a word or idea you don't understand, speak up! It's
also really important to try to keep talking openly with
your mother—not just today, but whenever you have
questions that come up
