today is my father's birthday. to celebrate, a large
portion of my Croatian family has come over to our house
with many types of delicious foods. including a full pig on
a spit.

i just love the atmosphere of this kind of event, and the
social and moral values displayed at this gathering are so
differant from the norm in my house, it always makes me
smile.

anyone else enjoy this kind of occasion?

before my grandmother died, we had massive events like this
but they were german, there was so much food that it filled
2 entire tables. everyone talked in german and i didnt know
what the hell they were saying, but at least they told the
really good jokes in english

my mother's family are all ukranian jews. besides the
ungodly amounts of food, every family gathering is
characterized by a virtual raid of every neighborhood
grocery store for vodka. by the end of the night there are
dozens and dozens of empty shot glasses lined up on the
table. my grandfather used to mix vodka into my soda when i
wasn't looking. i was five. oh, good times.
