Big record labels...

...who circulate messed up copies of their tracks on P2P
(where the first 20 seconds/whatever plays and then it goes
to static or just loops etc.) are doing themselves no
favours. After hearing Kanye West - Family Business on
Titsworth's show, I decided to check out some more tracks by
him, with the intention of buying a release. I just wanted
to see what the other tracks were like. Seeing as I can't
hear them in their entirety anywhere (his website only has a
small number of his tracks available to listen to.)

Perhaps I've been spoiled by things like Soulseek, but as I
can't easily hear more of ths artist's work, I probably
won't bother buying it. Labels need to grow up and stop
fighting P2P... they should embrace it, it's the main way a
hell of a lot of people hear new music.

The other thing is if you have to "work" to get a track
illegally (DL several copies before you get a working one)
you don't feel obliged to pay for it- you think, "well,
screw 'em I'll just keep the MP3s". If it's readily
available it encourages you to just treat it as a listening
service.

p2p will only appeal to big RC when they can make money from
it

yeah that's true.
All in all, downloading mp3s illegally doesn't do anything
to record labels - directly. But not supporting them does.
It's all about buying / not buying. But I know tons of
people who don't buy just because it's available for
"free".
I buy, I just think spending money on 'good' culture (art)
is among the best ways to spend money.

They do make money from it... they just need to grasp the
concept that money can be made indirectly. Giving promo
copies of a release away doesn't, in itself, make money.
That's not to say it doesn't help make money overall, in the
long run.

yeah, only the big record labels loose some money by P2P(and
they earn enough! so stop complaining) but the small ones
exists do to P2P I think

if P2P would not have exist I never heard of great artists
like Apparat, Proem, Esem, Adam Johnson, Múm, Claro
Intelecto, Akufen, Sigur Ross, Andrea Parker, Amon Tobin etc
etc which I have originals from

NO copy protection, respect the music
taken from !K7

A lot of people say so... but I'd rather say that's thanks
to internet in general than p2p. E.g. this messageboard
existed before p2p and people still would go here and get
tips of what records are nice and such...

you are right if it is about knowing the artist, but to hear
the music before buying it you still need P2P or labels like
planet-µ where you can hear most of their stuff

yeah that's true, if you need samples before you buy (I
usually listen to atleast one track before I buy, but not
always).
Some mailorder recordshops let you listen to records over
the phone though ;)
that's pretty cool, like you call them up and tell them you
want to hear a certain track and they put the vinyl on the
deck and play it for you so you can order it :)
I know that's what some people used to do before buying.

span of the vinyl disc.

i agree with ceri here. I heard so much. IDM wouldnt even
exsist to me if it werent for it. No shops here carry that
stuff and no stations really play it. p2p makes a market
when there is none

i completely agree. i believe i actually said in a post
yersterday that record labels, especially lesser known ones,
need to realize that mp3s and P2P are the ultimate marketing
tools, and they cost far less than most forms of
advertisement.

i think one of the main reasons why majors are losing so
much money because of p2p is because so many people are able
to hear all the other stuff that's out there (risk free)...
people are no longer held hostage by their televisions and
radios as to what kind of music they get to hear about...

Absolutely - and this terrifies them even more than the
prospect of having their own products pirated.

I guess one way to make this ok is simply to have COMPLETE
album available on the label websites but in low-quality. I
see no reason why somebody couldn't make himself an opinion
out of this. You know, kinda like the amazon.com samples
but the entire album.

Now if one stupid fuck rips those kind of albums and doesn't
buy it even if he likes it, well FUCK HIM. He obviously
doesn't care about music. Music labels should ignore them.

Bit of an update on this; I still haven't heard that album
in its entirety and hence haven't bought it. Nice lost sale,
record label.
