i might get this but i know fuck all about synths

yesyes. Tried one of these at the local music-shop... if you play piano, it's fucking hard to play this thing.. the keys are too small.
not too many options, but enough for starters.

yeah, probably. I'd buy one that had a few more options, though.
test it. ask the guy in the shop what he thinks about it. explain what you plan on using it for.. bring a sample of things you'd like to be able to do. there's no shame in asking those people, 'cause they know more than you no matter what!

Bring in a tape of your promo-ymca song and ask him what the best thing would be for you. He will give you the answer "El o El"

i dont like the microkorg, the size is kool but other than that i dont think its anything special. im selling my korg prophecy but its not really much use for someone who hasnt allready got a polyphonic synth cos its monophonic. i personally ahve a novation ks 300 squids for a lovely 16 poly 4 part multi timberal synth mmmmm yum

p.s if u want to get something to learn about synthesis u should go for a nord modular u can design ur own synths with it the microkorg is pretty cheap 2 but u'd need a midi keyboard

i have a microkorg and i think it's great. the vocoder is cool not only for vocals, but you can set it so the input (microphone/guitar/bass/whatev) feeds the source directly through without having to hold a note, allowing you to use the effects directly. it's like a friggin guitar processor + synth in one. i've had mine for almost a year now and i'm still learning new things about it...and although it is limited, it lets you edit programs with quite a wide variety of controls. for a starter synth i say go for it, it kicks my ass! ouch!

small keys, yeah, but not a big deal. (if you listen to the fucked jam by ween, you can hear one of the synth programs from the microkorg (it's the noisy sound)).
