I'm mike, and I have a problem.

I need to have, on cd, every track autechre/gescom have ever
made.

Can someone please advise me how I can go about getting all
those autechre remixs without resorting to an expensive bulk
purchase of singles with an autechre mix on their b-side, by
god knows how many artists that i don't give a shit about?

I'm afraid mp3 just won't do. You can hear the compression
in the high end. What can I say, I'm a purist.

How do you expect to have all tracks if you don't want to
buy the releases, or dl mp3?

A near impossible task. It was plain sailing until I saw
"mp3 just won't do". Even if you were willing to buy every
release with an ae remix on, you wouldn't be able to because
they are so rare, and a lot of them are vinyl only.

I urge people dissatisfied with mp3 to seriously consider
ogg. That's all I use.. of course it sucks if you have a
device which doesn't understand them, but whatever.

Oggs frequency-range is even smaller than mp3. why the fuck
would you want to downgrade?!

I realise my snooty rejection of mp3 does make it a tad
tricky (c'mon, you know you can hear the compression! and
don't give me any smartypants "incomplete without surface
noise" crap... it's not surface noise like vinyl, it's
distortion). And the chance of them suddenly releasing a '26
mixes for cash' type thing is pretty slim. Vanishingly so.

I reckon my best bet is to watch out for autechre
completists on ebay selling off all their stuff to fuel
their all-consuming drug habits. Or perhaps pay such
completists to post me a CDR. Would be a little miffed if
they just posted me a CD of ripped mp3s though.

mp3's arent that bad, man. I'm no "Dr. Audio" but I find as
long as it's 192kbit or more I am happy. Anything below that
is pretty bad, though.

It's probably more intelligent. besides, frequency range
isn't the big deal. Pop open a spectrum analyzer and
compare source wav with ogg and mp3--it's clear from that
who does how.

mp3s and oggs are dead to me. they sound like a robot that
has hammers instead of ears, and it uses these hammers to
make music by calculating the exact intervals to use for
each beat.

but I'm going home now. OFFICELIFE SUCKS (good compared to
other jobs, though).

IJEST!

Human eyes are much more developed than ears. I personally
find oggs to be good enough, and to be clearly superior to
mp3s. But I'm not stupid enough to trust only my ears, so I
did experiments like the one I said, generating visuals, and
you can't argue with that.

(I thought it was firmly established that ogg (a) is close
enough to CD and (b) annihilates mp3)

It's a swimming pool, and therefore has volume. 2D swimming
pools are too progressive even for autechre, and probably
not much fun either.

But mostly it's just there to piss you off. :)

Ibrowse Ebay every day, and I have never seen people selling
a complete Ae-collection. If you start with releases with
Ae-remixes, you will have to collect 60-70 releases. And
then you can start with tracks on compilations before you
move over to Gescom-releases, Gescom, remixes, and Gescom
appearances. What are we talking about then? Complete
Ae/Gescom? 200 releases?

Complete your Ae-collection, start collecting
Gescom-releases, and be happy with various remixes/tracks as
mp3. Just like I do. That's just a friendly advice.

it's from the Gantz Graf thing. The video to that is also
very nice to look at but not especially affecting.

I'm not hugely into Autechre. I loved Chiastic Slide, though
I only ever listen to it about once a year cos it doesn't
have enough humanness about it. Like listening to machines
wanking or something.

Some of ae's melodies are very warm and human. Try:

Draun Quarter on the Envane EP
Clipper on Tri Repetae
Most of Amber
Anvil Vapre EP
Garbage EP
Surripere on Draft 7.30

offline japes from Suriname on 2004-04-22 09:35 [#01155735]

Incunabula is wicked to sleep to actually. Tri Repetae I
wasn't much into except for the nice ambient Overand thing
at the end.

But the melodies on some of EP7 and Chiastic are the best.
That was my favourite period of theirs cos they'd evolved
enough to sound better than a bog standard techno outfit but
not so much that they begin to disappear up their own
arseholes.
