Hi there, you might recognise me, I lurk on the MB every
now on then. Soon, I should be upgrading from 28.8k modem to
broadband, but I really want to know the best package!

Depends massively on what's available in your area. You amy
well find that there is only one provider, and even within
that, only one speed/sort available.

surpisingly id go for aol. it has one of the fastest / most
reliable connections in the UK. & youll probably get a free
modem. the browser is a bit shit but you can still use IE6
or mozilla if you minimize it. and its handy for email
because its built into the software so you don't have to use
another email client, and their spam filter is pretty good
albeit not infallable.

What is BT Broadband like? You get a free Modem with them,
also, or is that Freeserve? I think it's Freeserve, but
those two are linked, aren't they? As in, you need a BT line
to use Freeserve.

adslguide has your answers if you're going for adsl. I
use Pipex and can't complain, although checking them now it
looks like they have introduced some kind of bandwidth limit
system (which SUCKS) to new signups.

I'm using BT. It works good. Make sure you have enough
microfilters though.

Speaking of packages. I got my up-to-26Mbit VDSL modem
today!

Too bad I don't live closer than 300m from the phonestation
to get the 26Mbit. I get about 8Mbit.

Scream they call it

Some BT broadbad operates through the phone lines (almost
like dial up). However, it effectively shares the phone line
by reducing the audio quality and using the "spare" to carry
internet traffic. The bitrate is variable (officially I
think it's 1mbs) and highly dependent on your distance from
the local exchange.

You need to put microfilters on each phone line access point
in the house when using this technology. You get two
included, but you have to pay for additional ones (about £6
each I think). So long as you don't have two dozen phone
points in your house, it's not a problem.

I get about 8 mbit/sec to , everybody gets about 8 mbit
hehe!
I have bredbands bolaget. Who the hell lives 300 m from a
phonestation anyways ??? Its so stupid.
8mbit is more then enough for now though , you hardly ever
get to use the full speed anyways (Unless you visit the
lovely swedish hubs at DC hehehe =))

512k is "normal". and you can get much faster connections
that 1mb in the uk. if you can afford it!

offline pOgO from behind your belly button fluff on 2004-04-21 12:49 [#01154577]

there arnt many UK ISP's that provide a residential
connection for more than 1meg, most are buisness packages

I think it's like less than 10% of ntl cmr's have a 1meg, so
there's not enough demand for us to bring out a higher
service level yet

What's wrong with the US and UK?

Sweden might be full of meatballs and Swiss choclate and
polar bears, but we seem to be lightyears ahead regarding
connection speeds. I know 4 people at work who have 10Mbit
(10mb or meg as you call it) connections in their houses,
both up and down, on fibreoptics. I don't know anyone who
still runs on modem. Maybe it's because I live in a bigger
city, but still.

Two ISPs here, Bostream and Bredbandsbolaget, both offer
10Mbit/26Mbit ADSL/VDSL in the major cities. I've had 5Mbit
since february 2000.

The best part: the prices are the same as in the UK or US.
Telia is probably the only real bloodsucker here (compare to
the UK prices/speeds mentioned here), but even they've had
to clean up their act. Some smaller ISPs are like that, but
they're essentially just hiring their business from Telia.

"ja! jaaa! Ja" with a weird german accent and are named
Inga.

Our government sucks. They just don't want us to have the
internet at proper speeds. If they did then we'd be getting
some 10Mbit connections at proper prices too. They are
available in the UK and faster but you'd have to get a
leased line.

So much for our "all government agencies online by 200x" (I
forget which year it was) promise from Tony... He didn't
specify (anywhere) what constitued being "online"
(presumably he meant to provide staff with internet access
for work purposes and also for each organisation to have a
webpage). Subsequently many smaller agencies simply spent
the grant on a cheap PC with a dial up line and they just
sat in the corner, unused and then used the rest of the
grant on frivalous things. Another great use of the
taxpayer's money :D

Best Broadband package is to get yourself a wireless network
at home and try to hook into someone elses as they haven't
encrypted their network. Great fun.
