Brian Eno 'Quite Club' installation in Frankfurt

2nd night, Monday

Brian Eno’s installation is part of the ‚Luminale’,
an art fair which takes place in Frankfurt from 18th –
22th April 2004.

Eno’s installation ‘Quite Club’ is placed at the
glass arcades in the huge trade fair complex. Which is quite
a contrast!

9 white trapezoids hang from the glass ceiling (3 huge
static ones and 6 smaller which are slowly roting).
Underneath is a white sitting complex (which also includes
hidden loudspeakers).

The basic music and sound backround comes from various
speakers which are mounted near the ceiling.

When I entered I couldn’t help thinking about a church.
Eno’s very quite humming voice, the bare ambient sounds,
sometimes overtones create a very sacred and beautifully
haunting athmosphere- when one is willing to open up on it.
For many busy trespassers this might not be worth a minute.

For others- an invitation to take a rest.

I have seen several Eno installations. Each time I had the
feeling, that while there, time slows down.

By sunset the surrounding slowly changed. Beams of black
light illuminated the sitting complex as well as the
trapezoids. Than different colored beams started to
illuminate the trapezoids, the rotation of the smaller ones
created beautiful shades/ color effects.

Each of the 5 nights the installation is present, another DJ
mixes/ reedits Eno’s installation music. However- I left
earlier. I can’t help myself asking: ‘Why reworking
something so beautiful and well balanced’? Eno did a great
job here, the sounds leave enough space to allow people to
think, imagine, have a conversation. It’s easy to ruin
everything by adding more sounds, more samples, more…….

I was told, that Eno himself was present all Sunday to talk
to people and to enjoy the Quite Club he created. Several
people mentioned that he is a very nice guy.
