On my laptop soundcard i have left/right RCA analog outputs and a midi output. What i want to do is have an output going into a p.a. system and another one going into headphones (seperate so that i can put different things into each output).
what do i need?

you want to use left/right RCA to plug in headphones AND pa?
you'll need to do some "christmas-tree" connecting. not recommended.

oh, yeah.. a splitter of sorts could be the thing, but you most likely won't be able to have simultaneous output to the pa and the headphones...

what soundcard do you have? i had the same problem, so i bought a maya 44ex. it has 4 outputs, i use to two of them to the p.a, and the the last two connected to the headphones through a splitter (2 to 1). i'm guessing you want to use the headphones output for monitoring?

A different soundcard.
There is no way with your current coundcard to send different signals to both headphones and pa, since you would be bridging the audio from the same source.

shit man, i don't know. when i was faced with this problem i just decided to work with music software that was all software controlled, and allowed manipulation in real time.
then for mixing tracks in a live environment, i got another laptop and i run the same software on it.
im sure theres a way to do what you are wanting to with just one laptop, im just not sure what it is. maybe the midi out can do something? im not sure, i don't know anything about midi either. i bet someone on here can help you out though. :\
