Majora's Mask

I really like certain aspects of the game (especially the
masks) but i really don't like the 3-day aspect of it.

i mean yeah it's cool for things to happen differently on
those 3 days, but after you save a town and then go back to
the begining and everything is bad again

i dunno it just feels like an empty gesture

yeah, that was really my only barb with the game, however i
do like how you have to be on your toes and not dilly-dally
too much - really adds a lot of tension to the game. but at
least once you get the song of soaring, the song of double
time and open shortcuts to the bosses in dungeons, doing
things in 3 days gets much easier.

but yeah, i understand what you mean. at least once you beat
it, everything you did gets done regardless.

is my avatar magic for anyone else?

sometimes it sticks at "pull the trigger" sometimes it's my
face and sometimes its a combination of the two

i dunno - i always felt the more action-based gameplay was
an element that made it unique. i don't know if i would be
comfortable with a zelda rpg - it would be quite a
departure.

I completely disagree... ofcourse. But I'm starting to
discover I'm one of the very few people who really
likes Majora's Mask ;-)

It's only three days... but they really made the most of it.
It's so detailed. More so than any other Zelda. There are no
characters just wandering around without any real purpose.
Everyone is actually doing something or going somewhere...
it's awesome. I got into it so much.

Usely I dislike having time-pressure in a game. But in
Majora's Mask I really enjoyed the apocalyptic atmosphere of
it all. The music. The moon getting bigger and bigger. All
the people fleeing to a safer place. Whenever I got to the
end of the 3day cycle I always got goosebumps. I played the
song of time only on the very last moment.

I can understand what you're saying but... well... I just
don't see things that way. :-) I love all the things alot of
people don't like about the game. Lucky me I guess.

Jarworski doesn't have a clue what he's talking about :-p

ha, trust surrounded to disagree and backup every
point with excellent detail, do you write game reviews?

but yeah, I've owned and spent a bit of time on Majora's
Mask and whilst it seemed to be lacking some of the charming
elements I enjoyed from OOT, I found that after a bit of
effort embracing the 3 day cycle, it offered a level of
suspense and sophistcation hard to find elsewhere. Trust the
big N to deliver such gamplay.

...btw I had a lash of Crystal Chronicles the other night,
how about those graphics!

"do you write game reviews?"

That would indeed be cool but... no I don't. Imagine the
life of those game-reviewers... developpers send them all
their new games for free... then they get paid to play with
them all day. And on top of that they get to give their
detailed opinion about it to an audience that is actually
interested to hear their opinion :-p What a life!

Crystal Chronicles does look really good. Probably also
because you have no control over the camera. They could make
the graphics to specificly look good from a fixed
camera-angle. If you'd be able to zoom in the illusion might
be broken. But nevermind that, as it is the game looks
really beautiful :-)

I don't really like it though. It could have done with a
little more variation I think. Maybe just 2 or 3 different
attack-moves would have improved the gameplay alot!.
It's supposed to be much more fun with multiple players. But
I haven't been able to try that :-/

that's a good point about the graphics in Crystal
Chronicles, I'm sure the original resident evil wouldn't
have looked anywhere as impressive if the camera was to
move.

Since your a game guru surrounded, I wanted to see if you
could solve a gaming issue of mine, I've got MarioGolf
Toadstool Tour and I'm having trouble using codes for the
game at the password entry screen. I'm presuming there's a
difference between the PAL and NTSC codes but I haven't been
able to find any info on the net anywhere? Any ideas?

I'm playing the first Resident Evil (the remake) right now
as it happens. (well not right now, but it's the game
currently in my 'cube). It looks amazing. Especially the
lighting is un-be-lie-va-ble!

That one room with all the crows... where the chandelier
slowly swings back and forth, and all the shadows match the
movement perfectly... it's amazing... really amazing.

Not to mention when you walk past a window and lightning
strikes outside :-)

What sucks about such realistic graphics though, is
that it makes the characters look shit. I mean they look
pretty good in Resident Evil. But because the backgrounds
are so smooth, you really start to notice all the polygon
blockiness.

About your question... Mario Golf won't be out over here for
another couple of months :-( So I obviously haven't played
it yet... and can't help you with those passwords. Why does
it have passwords in it anyway? Aren't passwords a thing of
the past? Everything is just saved now right? Oh well. Sorry
but I really wouldn't know what you have to do :-/
Good luck anyway!

yes, crystal chronicles is much more fun in multiplayer, but
you need GBAs for mulitplayer, which is kind of dumb, but
also makes sense because you can open your menu without
interrupting the action. however, when opening your menu,
you are wide open to attack. you can combine spells for
strong combo attacks, and combine spells+attacks for
elemental damage. however, there are quite a few flaws in
the game that really detract from the experience. that, and
the gameplay gets repetitive very quickly.

"but you need GBAs for mulitplayer, which is kind of

"

I know. What percentage of the people who bought FF:CC do
you suppose actually get to experience the game to the
fullest (4 player-mode)? I'm betting less than 10%
It's just so inconvenient. I hope for their next console
Nintendo will just make a tiny monitor on the controller and
get it over with.

Zelda Four Swords is supposed to be even better than FF:CC
in 4-player mode. The action actually switches to the
GBA-screen when you enter a building etc. It sound awesome!
But how am I gonna find 3 people willing to play this game
with me, who all have a GBA and a link-cable?

"but also makes sense because you can open your menu
without interrupting the action.
"

Yeah I understand how it works. Maybe they should have made
the GBA optional or something. I'm sure there would have
been other solutions for the menus as well. (like maybe a
small transparant menu that just appears on the tv).
Plus this game is hardly a proper rpg anyway. The menu's
aren't nearly as big as complex, and you need to acces them
far less often. I like the idea of connectivity, but making
the multiplayer useless without GBA's was a dumb idea.

i'm going to hold off playing this, and most other games for
the n64, gamecube and any other slightly-new systems, until
they are considered "classics" and people are then mainly
just playing hyper-randomly-generated-reality based games
that have much less of a story because all integral
characters in the game are other bored misfit players
somewhere in the world trying to collectively fuck up the
game..

Not to sound pessimistic or anything, but what if you get
get runover by a truck tomorrow? Then you'll have never
gotten a chance to play all those wonderful games.

i just don't play many games.. especially newfangled ones..
(not that this game is) but when i do play games now, i'm
still catching up on the real "classics".. for nes, snes,
genesis, etc.. there's so many great old games.. and i am
liking these newer-style games less and less.. so i figure,
by the time that games become so real that they are just
pointless replacements for reality, i'll go and play the
"classic" n64-era games, and everyone will laugh at the
paltry graphics, but at least i will be playing something
more surreal. ...however, i probably will get run
over by a truck before that happens.

I've still never really gotten a chance to sit down and play
Majora's Mask... and it tears me up inside.

These ''new style'' games are better than ever. There's a
lot of shallow shit released these days, but there was even
MORE back then. Glancing through my SNES rom collection,
there's got to be 100 mindless Final Fight style beat 'em
ups (granted, a few of them are fun as hell!).

Games will NEVER be ''pointless replacements'' for reality.
They're becoming even more of an escape all the time.
Imagine if a kid in 1987 could get a crack at Grand Theft
Auto: San Andreas or Deus Ex. And when the graphics are good
enough to completely emulate, say, a city street, pixel for
pixel, it'll still be a sublime retreat... because you'll be
able to do stuff you can't do in real life, like fire a
rocket at somebody's face.

I downloaded the game from the internet and played it on an
emulator. It was a bit jerky but still playable. I made my
mistake when I put all the cheats on and flew around the map
killing everyone. That kinda destroyed any chance of me
finding the game interesting as I had discovered ever single
place in the entire map. What a fool I was...

offline Q4Z2X on 2004-04-22 14:41 [#01156269]
Points: 5264 Status: Lurker

meh. there are now just realistic games that depict things
that you wouldn't want to do in real life. the only thing
unrealistic is there aren't accurate or detailed depictions
of the consequences of those actions.
whereas most old games are more otherworldly. i mean, what
can be more unrealistic than being able to only move in 2
dimensions, or being healed from some glowing sphere of some
kind. i know many newer games have the same kind of things
in them, but they usually try to cover up the fakeness of
it, by changing that glowing sphere into a magical first aid
kit, one that can heal several blasts to the head. they give
you "save points" instead of just letting you die in the
game and have to play the whole damn thing over again from a
new life. they replace the impossible 2 dimensional
acrobatics with impossible 3 dimensional acrobatics.
so, basically, video games will always be surreal, but
nowadays it seems like they go out of their way a bit to
make the surreal bits more believable, and to conceal the
stupid impossibilities of the video-game world. i prefer the
more fantastic type games.. and i know there are quite a few
exceptions; newer games that utilise the extra power of the
systems but still maintain the fun of the classic games they
are expanding on. i'll be waiting for those games. i know
the best will still be talked about in 10+ years, and they
won't be talking about the graphics because they'll all be
playing current games with 10 times the graphical power..
games that will again be replaced by the gimmick-ridden
realness of newer games and so forth. only through time do
we realise the true classics.. that's why no one wants to
watch crappy '80s horror or sci-fi movies with laughable
special effects. you'd watch them if the story was good, or
it was entertaining, but you don't watch them for the sole
purpose of being impressed by special effects and filming
methods, the way that people do for current movies of that
kind.
to sum it up, i'm a cheapskate who doesn't want to buy any

Personally I like to think of it simply as, it's enjoyable
to look at, it's spontanious and exciting, it measures up to
what's expected in society. Because tastes and trends only
evolve fowards, bigger and better and least of all, the
storyline. You see I play happily through serious sam and I
don't even know where the hell I am when I'm playing it.

I agree with some of your points. Some aspects of older
games are lacking in these new ones. Games are too easy now,
but that's to be expected since so much work goes into them
these days and of course the developers want you to see it.
It's more artistic than ever. I LOVE seeing a beautifully
rendered gigantic arena, or an intimidating boss. Games like
Ninja Gaiden, Ikaruga and Viewtiful Joe are holding the
fort, though. And Metal Gear Solid is insanely tough on hard
mode.

Games aren't just gimmicky now, though. Games are different
than movies, the DEPTH increases as the technology grows.
Things like Ratchet and Clank have tons of flash and even
more substance, more than any SNES game. The sheer scope of
it is awesome. And its totally ''fantastic''. Technology
enables it to out ''fantasize'' any old game. The cut scenes
are genuinely hilarious and there's no doubt that if they
could have done that years ago, they would have. And the fun
is totally in the gameplay.

But you know that already, like you said. You make some good
points and I see where you're coming from but I personally
agree with hardly any of them. Different strokes for
different folks, eh. But for every brilliant game I can
think of a Genesis or a Turbo Duo or a Jaguar (....), I can
think of a souped up, deeper take on the theme on PS2 that
sacrifices nothing in fantasy or challenge or
what-have-you.

That said, my favorite systems of all time are SNES and
Genesis, but even I have to admit that the nostalgia factor
is ultimately what puts them over the top for me. Because I
wouldn't spent nearly as much time playing Castlevania 4 if
I could have had Symphony of the Night or Devil May Cry at
the time.

PS- I'm a proud new owner of Majora's Mask! I went to pick
up a PS2 Online Adaptor an hour ago (beginning Final Fantasy
11) and I saw this at Gameworld, snatched it up! Can't wait
to play it.

I also got Jak and Daxter, Siren, and the first Dark Cloud
(I have the awesome 2nd one) during that excursion. I'm
crazy loaded,

''I also got Jak and Daxter, Siren, and the first Dark Cloud

(I have the awesome 2nd one) during that excursion. I'm

...but not for long, at this rate''. Hmm, the ''character
count'' lied to me, it said I had 10 characters left.

Anyway, I hope my Nintendo 64 works this time. It won't boot
Starfox 64 for some reason.

offline Q4Z2X on 2004-04-22 16:07 [#01156460]

yeah.. the character count lied to me as well..

also, i'm not going to try to completely ignore some
possibly great games, but if you wait a while for them, the
prices go down considerably and the great gameplay is still
there. it's a perfect scheme for someone who isn't really
impressed or amused that much by graphics.
..but you can't wait too long or the games start
being taken from the 75¢ table at a garage sale, and are
put onto ebay and sold for considerably more.

i think i'm going to borrow my friend's ninendo 64 and
playstation some day soon and play some of the newer
classics that i never really got around to playing at all.
i'm always several systems behind.. but i'm fine with that..

it's always great to play some of the countless delicious
snes and genesis games that i never got to play in the prime
of their popularity, even though the graphics aren't
dazzling they are still charming and appropriate in
their own right. and somehow it can be nostalgic, even if
i've never played the game before.

as for starfox, didn't that game require a special graphic
upgrade card thing-a-majig? maybe that's the problem..
sorry in advance if that's not the case and i am just
foolishly stating the obvious.. or maybe it wasn't
actually the game that required the upgrade..

I don't have the money or opportunity to get my hands on too
many old cartridges, but I'm an avid emulator user and
there's nothing I love more than digging up a classic
Genesis ROM that I've never played. I'd rather do that than
get a new Xbox game, myself. Recently, I played Traysia for
the first time and I have a new favorite song ever. Great
little game.

Star Fox came with a rumble pack, but it doesn't need an
expansion pack (which I have installed anyway). What a
shame, that was the ultimate ''pick up and play'' game, just
awesome. The Panzer Dragoon Orta of the late '90s.

The original Star Fox for SNES was one of the biggest
''WOW'' games I've ever played.
