Well, it looks like I'll be up literally the whole night tonight finishing off some coursework. Fortunately, it's essays as opposed to anything practical, so if I make the odd silly mistake through tiredness, it won't set me back hours (as it might when programming). I've gotten good at doing my work on time the past couple of years, but due to a lot of deadlines close together this one has been unavoidable.
Still, on the plus side it's nothing like the 40 hour straight (just with very short breaks for food/toilet) that I did at the end of my A-levels.
Any tips on how not just to stay awake, but stay focused (after about 12 hours working my concentration gets bad and my work rate is almost halved)? I don't like to cane the coffee too much as whilst it keeps you awake, it makes you jittery and prone to making mistakes.
Oh and I have to drive through the rush hour tommorow morning too :D

Oscillik: A degree in Computer Studies. It's a reasonably open course in terms of selection of modules, but the ones I've picked means it has a heavy slant on networks/security. These three bits are all in that area. I've got law and graphics work to do in the next few days, but I'll do them with time to spare.
Anus: Yes trust me, I thought I'd grown out of leaving it late and having to stay up all night, but I've been working pretty much flat out the past couple of weeks. It really was unavoidable this time. Lots of deadlines fell together and they're all highly important to my degree, so I can't just do the tempting thing and say, "Bugger it!" and go to bed.
Crazone: Ta.

I'll definately post when it's all done. You keep us updated of your progress too.
Gigi:I sometimes push a pen (with the lid on) into the back of my hand very hard as the pain gives you enough adrenalin to stay awake/concentrate for a bit. Sadly, it only lasts for about 5 minutes.
Oscillik: There are plenty of single year courses you can do at sixth form colleges in computing. If you really want to get a job in it you could even get a fairly low level "building PCs"/whatever job to get some experience and do an MCP or MCDBA exam in your own time to get a vocational qualification.

Listening to music through headphones worked for me, back in the days when I had to stay up all night too to finish stuff for my study. When I got really tired, I started listening to cd's through my headphones... and that somehow managed to keep me awake for another couple of hours. It might just be me though. I suppose everybody reacts differently to sleepiness.
Ofcourse you really shouldn't be posting here either ;-) Especially so early in the night. Now you still have lots of energy (?). Use it for your work!

Hmmmmmm, have you considered pushing the pin into your gum and then tounging the wound. That would work and it's a damn site easier. Swill vinegar too. Or put lemon juice up your nostriles
I have done all these. They all work but you feel shit the next day.

I tend to write a paragraph, think about the next one and let it arrange itself in my head whilst I post. Right now, I'm considering the ways of ordering which sorts of computing attacks cause most disruption/cost to a business.

hurray! a fellow allnighter! i'm doing one myself this night too. good luck over there...
i usually drink bucket loads of water, that usually does it for me. occasionally eat something with sugar. also, take a short walk outside, night air is usually cool and fresh, which is good. oh, and splash your head with cold water...
keep it up!

Gwely: It's never too late to go back to school. One of my best friends at my university is in his 40s.
Tolstoyed: I'll finish the 600 words easily enough... it's just a matter of finding references to back up what I say (it's a pretty specialist subject that it's on and there's not much about it) :)

Yeah, it's all done and in my bag now. One of them is "pretty good" (probably a high 2:2, low 2:1), the other two are really good. Hopefully high 2:1s :D
It's always worth it when the work good- it's absolutely crushing when you stay up all night and you know it's gash.

So, I made it to uni without crashing... The hard part now is staying awake in the warm labs for 2.5 hours before the place I have to hand it in opens.
