With the deliberate assassinations of two high-profile Hamas leaders, guaranteed to stir the Palestinians into more extreme action, not to mention turning the Arab world even more against them, I'm wondering it they are trying to engineer some huge confrontation, which will inevitably drag the West into it -- most probably, sickeningly, on the side of Israel (although I feel a lot of Western States will not side with Israel) ... It's generally accepted that "peace keeping" merely prolongs conflict, albeit in a more low-key manner. Decisive victory and utter dominance by one side lends itself to a more stable situation at least... |

I'm OK with "Israel" being handed back to the Palestinians, yes. Ceri -- Subdueing a population thru fear and corrupt power will lead to a "stable" situation, yes. At what price? Backing the Bully is hardly the thing to do in this situation ... On the basis of some Spurious claim that "God" said they could have this piece of land, the Allies have created a nightmare in the Middle East for the past 50-odd years ... Why not tour the world designating arbitrary pieces of Land to whomever they feel like, because maybe their "Gods" or Ancient Scriptures said it was there ... it's utterly ridiculous ... Why not go to Australia and give the Aborigines the land back, or go to the USA and give back the Continent to the natives? International law is woolly (in terms of definition, who adheres to it and who will enforce it) at best, so writing any war off as illegal isn't really sensible. Law only works on the assumption that it can be enforced by a higher power. This is normally the state. In the international arena, the "higher power" is either the most powerful country (or alliance of countries), more powerful beings from another planet or, God. Do not confuse ethics/morality with law, they are different things, even if there is a great deal of crossover between them. |

I wasn't referring to the recent War -- I'm talking about Israel basically Invading another country and occupying their land ... That, to me, is not very legal, however woolly any of the legislation: they were given X-amount of land, and arrogantly decided they wanted more, so they went about killing civilians and destroying their homes so they could move themselves in. |

Don't get me wrong- I don't support what Israel have done on this occassion. A family friend has had one of her houses near the Ghaza strip simply bulldozed by the Israelis and the land seized. She says no warning was given and that she is just grateful no one was inside at the time. |
