Which are your favorite numbers? Odds or evens?

I think even numbers are nice.

Ah, the old classic debate. It's very controversial to bring
it up again as I'm sure you know the kind of battles that it
instigates. Call me crazy but I am gonna say that evens are
definitely the best. Let battle commence.

Evens, definately. Especially multiplication by 2;

2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048,4096, etc. Gotta love
that sequence (music, computers, etc.).

that.

and to add to the superiority of evens:

adding two odds make one even.

adding two evens make on even.

adding one odd and one even makes an odd

two to one!

where you grab ahold of someones arm or leg hair and say
"ODDS OR EVENS" and then they say either odds or evens, and
then you pull out their hair, and if they're right you stop,
if they're wrong you do it again

in the sequence of multiplication by two, 2 = (ground) 0. As
two is the base-number, it is the same as zero, 'cause in
this situation 2 has always existed. Since it is impossible
to find a place where there is NOTHING (0), 0 is defined as
the "something that has always been there" or "the something
that preceeds the something you are adding." So if 2 is what
preceeds what you are adding, 2 = 0.

I was pointing out that Ceri was citing the binary table as
a reason for the evens winning.

But the Binary table starts with 1 making the odd number the
most important.

I'd consider 0 to be even, simply because of where it fits
on the scale:
etc.-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3, etc.

I'm trying to make a mod wrong!

That is impossible to do. Does not compute.

And I was refering to *2, not specifically the binary table
(I actually just meant all those numbers (64,128,256,etc.)
crop up in computing. Of course, the reason they do is that
they are part of the binary table :)

16, 32, 256 and 1024 were considered special numbers
by some of the old philosophers. Some spent their whole life
trying to figure out number-combinations that lead to these
numbers.

I can think of a few other versions of this, and that is
Fibonaccios "magical" numbers (each number is the sum of the
two before it): 2 , 3 , 5 , 8 , 13 , 21 , 34 , 55 and
so-on.

and the golden ratio, which is 1,618 or something like that.

I am beyond these petty arguments about odd or even; I much
prefer the much more expansive field of real numbers,
wherein one can discuss the rationality or irrationality of
numbers, or whether they are algebraic or transcendent.

That being said, all the primes except for 2 are odd, so the
evens are more unique in that respect. Also all of the known
perfect numbers are even (although no one has yet proved
that an odd perfect number doesn't exist).

Also, to keep this somewhat music related, all of the known
weird numbers (like 70) are even.

So, I'm going to have to give a slight edge to the evens.

Evens are closed under the operations of mult and addition.
Odds are closed under multiplication only. Evens have the
additive identity, whereas odds have the additive identity.
Anyway so you can form a monoid with evens and plus, and one
with odds and mults.

eh, closed under addition is nice, so evens.

(by closed I mean you don't leave the set under those
operations)

Odds. I always leave things like the TV volume on odd
numbers, particularly 21, 25, 31, 35. Depends on the model
of the television and the general volume level I require. I
also turn lights on and off 7 times every time. If I
accidentally do 6 or 8, I'm screwed in life.

Odd has potential, though it's a gamble. It's worth taking.
Even is solid but doesn't have much upside, if you know what
I mean.
