Sitting in my office listening to this (the album, not only the song), and even though it's raining and grey skies outside, it feels like a hot spring (not summer.. that's a bit far-fetched today...) day.
Anyway.. this guy is a great musician!

my favourite things..
i have the special edition version of a love supreme and .. neither of the cds really does it for me. perhaps i need to listen to it more, familiarise myself with it more, but it's just a tad too inaccessible.
My favourite things is just PERFECT though. beautiful.

i needed a few listens to get into a love supreme. i didnt realize the seething energy and undercurrent pressure at first. but then: BOOM.
first jazz album i got was ascension by coltrane. it's crazy. there are moments in the 40 minutes long song that are just chaos held together by rhythmic piano and bass. it gets your orgasms. the religious driving force is always present. the music sounds very complete somehow.

"A love supreme" is one of my favourite musics in the world. It's bloody intense.
I never really liked "my favourite things". :-(

the story behind a love supreme is what gives it its real energy i think. it's something special in that regard
my very first album was dave brubeck quartet's "time out", when i was four. now THAT'S orgasmic. in a cool, laid back way.. :D

Wynford. It was in reply to Torture Garden. People who often dislike Coltrane, are silly people who like easy stuff, that doesn't shock or anything.
To say he's rubbish, is pure rubbish!

now, THAT was silly! :P Coltrane's early stuff is VERY accessible and enjoyable, and not 'shoking' at all.
especially My Favorite Things - that's beautiful stuff, indeed.

Torture Garden was probably talking smack... but even if he is being honest i'm pretty damn sure he's heading the other way, as in Albert Ayler, Ornette and such... as opposed to the Marsali (that's the plural term)
i get the impression that he knows more about jazz than anyone else in this forum...
in any case i loves de Coltrane... between the aformentioned two i'd go with A Love Supreme... but i'm not entirely sure that it's my favourite rekkid of his (i certainly DO love it)... possibly Ole Coltrane, or the Village Vanguard sessions... or maybe even Ascension... that album is fucked...

Oddly enough I was listening to this this morning, after Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. As you know, the title track is about 13 minutes long, and after 12 minutes my girlfriend asked if it would ever end... she's not a Coltrane fan.

hahaha! I'd say she isn't a jazz fan, then... the greatest songs are the neverending improvisation-things!

it's insane to hear how the song mutates from the version on My Favourite Things to the version on Olatunji...
