that's great dude
just fruitloops (flstudio 4.5.1.)
the nice sounding synth is just a sample from flstudio: i
didnt do anything with it. the flute i did screw around with
though, as well as the guitar.
why 2.46 to the end?
ill post youre reply in my thread on xlt to keep that bumped
(being a internet artist is tough man)

there's an awful lot of fl in your tracks, big. i like the
bass synth you used in nine inch reich, but other than that,
it's not my cuppa tea.

i use floops too

be sure to fuck over the default sounds or itll sound a bit
boring

will download when i get back from lunch

yes, it's all fl actually (you mean fruityloops?)
in two weeks ill have dsl and download reason. now i can
just use fruityloops.

maybe it's the outlook but i thought i could make somewhat
more vintage sounding tracks with fruity, so that's what i
did
i wasnt sure that bassline fitted well enough in the track
actually :)
tnx for listening and commenting

what i meant was, you use many of fl's samples (i do too,
btw). like jaroen said, it's fun to tweak them. otherwise,
download and/or make your own samples for a fresher sound :)
btw, it sounds oldskool, alright

well i cut all my mixing (mostly cranking up the volumes)
again because it ended up pretty crappy in mp3. actually in
aeph and nine inch reich i didnt bother at all anymore,
because i thought it sounded fine as it were

do have a good lunch, sir

yes i thought that's what you meant
tweak is just turning up the volume? then it sounds more
modern or something?

eh? no, tweaking as in letting loose all kinds of effects on
a sample or changing the settings etc. just messing about
with fl will get you somewhere interesting, eventually

to be brutally honest: the sounds are horrible.

they sound like presets, and seeing what other people say (I
don't use floops, so I wouldn't know) they are!

they sound flat and don't work together well. overall it
makes the track sound like a copy of what a typical
oldschool-IDM track should sound like.

mm. I worded that too harsh, btw. :)

but it is what I think.

I think you should spend more time on tweaking samples,
creating new sounds. structure'll come later.

offline big from lsg on 2004-04-14 13:23 [#01142590]
Points: 23711 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

well im just starting out and think ill eventually grow sick
of the sounds and will want to make my own sounds, but for
the time being..

a copy of what a typical oldschool-IDM track should sound
like
ill take that as a complement :)

i dont know what i should do now exactly now though: use
better samples of the same intruments and stuff (because i
like them), mix them better?

you're sure you listened to nine inch reich?, i think that
sounds pretty good still..

thanks for your listening and commenting qrter, you werent
harsh, you're the best
btw: you werent sitting in bus 12s from de uithof at 18:30
tonight with some girl, were you?

that's the one I listened to, yessir.

if you really want to use those "instruments and stuff", I'd
say - yes, use better samples AND mix them better. :)

I wasn't sitting in bus 12s today, no. I hardly ever take
that bus.

didnt the mallet that comes in at 2:13 sound like reich

the track is more meant as something like nine inch nails
and orbital, not idm

i still like it, it's my baby

well apparantly you sofisticated bunch dont really like it
(some dude on watmm didnt like it either)
thats too bad
i just wonder if it's bad to make an old sounding track.
like maybe it sounded well produced ten years ago
isnt the track good aside from the sounds, you know
melodicly, build up, and stuff?
i only want positive comments from now on
like i have a good haircut or something

my advice is, don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
just make music the way you think it sounds good, experiment
A LOT and just keep doing it. one can only improve at it.

Dear Big, I listened to your track and I quite liked it.
Don't worry too much about using presets, Mr David Bowie
himself said he likes using preset sounds, and everyone in
the studio moans at him saying "oooh we better do our own
sample" and he says "fuck it, whoever made the synth (or
whatever) knows what they're doing, go with the preset."
Fact: David Bowie has sold more albums than anyone on this
board.

hm i can see the link to reich, esp the part at 1:50

thats actually pretty good, so is the 'minimalist'
percussion and the stuff at 2:20

but for chrissake, if i were you id lose the stuff in the
intro. and the drum samples at 3:50 sound like mindless
techno, and the repetetive melody line isnt worth those
crappy sounds

it's all about fruitys typical sounds, they do suck, i have
used fruity myself for a long time.

And i dont mean! that youre suppose to buy yourself an shit
expensive mic and record everything yourself, that is just
not the way to start making music, your music sound exactly
like mine did when i just started making music with floops.

my advice is that u dowload a set of samples or just stay
away of very cheesy samples that are in fruityloops.

if u want i could hook u up with a bunch of nice basic
samples or you can simply use Direct connect or something
similar and u will find loads of samples that sounds better
then the very small amount u get with fruity.
U should check the internet out for free VST synths and
effekts, theres loads of them wich usually has nicer sounds
then default synths in fruity.

im sry i dont have any links for you =/ i have them on a
computer that is far away in another town.
But searching the internet for samples and plugins usually
gives loads of resaults

good luck

hey, thanks for the comments everyone, i thought i'd sent
this thread of to oblivion, but you saved it! :D
i really shouldnt care that much what other people think,
but i do, cant help it. :-/
most importantly id like to say again that i liked those
samples in floops and yes ill be finding other cool samples
when i have dsl but for the time being i liked screwing
around with these samples. yes i just started out, but im a
perfectionist (though i couldnt go through the hassle of
mixing)
and, for fun now on the track:
hm i can see the link to reich, esp the part at 1:50
that part to me sounds like orbital, the box. the real reich
sounding bit to me is from 2.14 with the mallet (i only know
it's called that because of reich)
thats actually pretty good,
yes
so is the 'minimalist' percussion and the stuff at 2:20

all those sounds i connected to nine inch nails for some
reason
but for chrissake, if i were you id lose the stuff in
the
intro.

those flutes in the intro too, like eraser, still the second
half of the track i think is better
and the drum samples at 3:50 sound like mindless
techno,

well i was glad i could make a working up tempo beat, i
never made that before (i made it with some kicks and snares
and epecially delay. with the crappy ride i thought of your
ride on swee, i kid you not)
and the repetetive melody line isnt worth those
crappy sounds

so you like the melody? as i said i like the combination of
those melodies at 2.14
cheerio, big

thats actually pretty good,
yes

that made me giggle

i know about the ride in swee swee and i hate it (lost the
flp) so please dont make the same misstake and get it to
sound a bit less annoying :)

to be just like you i deleted the flp file :D

you may check out s.a.w. too, it's really cheesy and even
more fl sounding

offline big from lsg on 2004-04-16 11:56 [#01145998]

mm im just listening without headphones: especially the
bassline sounds terrible (not the basssynth that actually
sounds better), and alot is out of balance together. s.a.w.
sounds too empty.
and the drum samples at 3:50 sound like mindless
techno

well it's not 4 to the floor i believe, im not sure what is
though because of the delays i used, kinda reminds me of the
dust brothers, or so i wished
