What the hell are they about? Aphex Twin and Steve Albini have referred to them as "influential". Fascinating. They are fond of Peter Sutcliffe because "he got prostitutes off the streets" and say that their idea of beauty is "the victim". They are a collective of pro-paedophilia misogynists who despise the human race, and your hero thinks they're influential. Intelligent Dance Music.

obviously rdj has sadistic tendencies, based on his smojphace sets of deliberate noise. ordinarily i prefer to not dwell on the personalities of artists, i'd rather focus on the music. though with whitehouse, that's not an issue because they really are such shit.
if i was going to listen to something extremely violent, i'd much rather hear merzbow. everything i've heard from whitehouse ranged from mediocre to embarrassingly bad. while merzbow also explores his interests in controlled violence, at least it's aesthetically interesting. whitehouse, to me, represents an ugly, uninteresting, self-indulgent dead end.
while it's no secret that whitehouse is motivated by sadistic desire, their compatriot peter sotos does publicly celebrate child rape and murder. i've seen his artwork, consisting of collages of "missing child" photos with men ejaculating onto the children's faces. i've read interviews with him in which he describes his profound pleasure in reading about the reactions of parents whose children have been raped and murdered. he has been affiliated with child pornographers.
in their album artwork whitehouse and peter sotos are not "satirizing" or "parodying" any childhood nostalgia trends in music; they are celebrating and promoting violence against children. btw, the same artist who has done album covers for whitehouse that celebrate violence against children is the same artist who did the cover for venetian snares' "find candace."
nevertheless, i don't care what rdj thinks or likes, i'm interested in the music, assuming it doesn't celebrate violence or child exploitation.
for those who are interested in my opinion... : D

So what does this tell us about Richard D James, Russell Haswell, Steve Albini and everybody else who finds them "influential"? The whole notion of "intelligent dance music" has been ripped apart in this single thread. RICHARD D JAMES, AKA THE APHEX TWIN, THINKS THAT A COLLECTIVE OF PRO-PAEDOPHILIA, MISOGYNISTIC RETARDS ARE "INFLUENTIAL".

music has no goddamn linguistic reference points... furthermore, having a rudimentary understanding of Whitehouse, which, clearly, you do not... i contend with your assertions of them being paedophilic misogynists... this is merely the misinterpretation of their art by thickheaded middleclass mommies who had the unfortunate experience of walking in on their adventurous son while he was listening to them... when a person takes a photograph of a dead person does that mean they like killing people?

when in music does a child get raped? and you know what... why the fuck would i bother to defend something that clearly neither of us has a firm concept of... (namely whitehouse)... when all i have to do is draw a line from absolutely every individual to something fascistic? the majority of whitehouse is noise... if i like noise, does this mean that i agree with the opinions of absolutely every person who ever made it... the atom bomb was noisy, so i must love the way killed thousands upon thousands of japanese... makes perfect sense to me... music is inherently abstract and untranslatable... and since everyone gets something different from it... how on earth can you make such broad sweeping extrapolations on everyone's opinions on the world from their liking a piece of music? if aphex twin loves fascism so much... why doesn't he make his symbol a contorted version of a swastika? why does he associate with fascists and heil everyone he sees? wouldn't that be a better indication of what aphex's opinions are on things?

I don't really know what they are all about, but a brief foray into their discography shows this album, Dedicated to Peter Kurten
and so here is an article about this 'Peter Kurten'.
Okay, so what. Who gives a shit. Someone can create the worst 'record' in the world (say an 80 minute cd of what sounds like the violent rape, torture and murder of a 4 year old girl). Yeah, okay, as long as it is all fake and no little kid was involved in making that, who cares?
I think it's just about de-sensitization more than anything.

i saw them live last year here in Dublin and they were really fucking excellent. Musically it was all about really really throbbing power electronics. It was about taking you to an altered state of mind through extreme lyrics and a totally energetic showmanship and stage-presence. The lyrics were confrontational and stuff but you just knew it was in no way gratuitous and was from the heart. It was utterly in the style of Chirs Morris's Paediophile program - cut to the core of a society in social decay on one hand as relflected in the media.
I first heard of them during RDJ's gabba/noise set at Sonar 2001 and it blew me away - pure angry energy that left you really in a very mellow trance because of its harshness - very clever i thought. Then Russel Hassel mixed em into his laptop noise set at ATP03 and again it worked to take you somewhere strange and stimultaing and angry at wars and famines and the worlds horribleness.
Its mood music - anti-ambient i suppose.

I've seen images produced by Peter Sotos, see my earlier post. Whitehouse applies a sadistic philosophy that has nothing to do with politics or social commentary. Here's some info about Peter Sotos:
Peter Sotos (1960?-) is a Chicago, USA-born writer most noted for his obsessive, disturbing ruminations on serial murder and sex.
In 1986 Sotos was arrested and charged with obscenity and possession of child pornography. He was at the time producing a self-published newsletter or "fanzine" named Pure, which numbered among its topics appreciations of serial killers and child abuse. The child pornography charged stemmed from the discovery of a copy of a magazine, Incest #4, which turned up during a search of Sotos's apartment. Charges of obscenity were dropped, but Sotos was eventually found guilty of the possession charge, and was given a suspended sentence and a fine.
Sotos has continued to write, numbering among his works Tool, Parasite, Index, Tick, and Lazy. He has also written an afterword for Ian Brady's book The Gates of Janus.
He was until 2003 a seminal member of the industrial noise band Whitehouse.
The original Pure, along with Tool and Parasite have been reprinted by Jim Goad as Total Abuse.

taken from the FAQ of the official page:
"viii. Does Whitehouse have any political stance or viewpoint?
- Whitehouse have never had any agenda in this regard. No crusades, no mission. William Bennett: "There are certain people who, for needs of self-affirmation of their own prejudices, demand that certain things be demonised in contrast to their own image. You know you're fucking loving it, you know who you are, just admit it."
[...]
"xiii. Are Whitehouse 'misogynist'? - The lyrics of certain songs (in addition to some of the writings of Peter Sotos) have led certain people to the view that the group is misogynist. Judging by the high percentages of females at recent Whitehouse live actions it might seem odd to reach this assumption. William Bennett: "I don't think I'm a misogynist at all, although I can understand why people might question that. There are a set of much more complex emotional functions involved with these songs and I've never felt that simple hatred was one of them."
now...
they say people like to "demonize" them but they can't say they aren't playing with it, too...
and they must still have some issues with women and stuff.
i don't know what to think really = /
*searches for interviews*
i downloaded their collaboration with NWW, "The 150 Murderous Passions", haven't listened to it yet but i feel somewhat guilty about it. even if it's just downloading.

i read an interview with william bennett years ago in which he said (paraphrased) "i don't eschew making music because i can't make music, but because i choose to not make music." he described whitehouse as an attempt to inflict violence on the listener. i don't think it matters if you are male or female.

i agree there is more interesting noise out there than whitehouse (boyd rice for sure), but since rdj said they're important and we've got to talk about them:
i'm always joking with my friends (xx + xy alike) about women belonging in the kitchen, etc. it's funny because it's so blatently wrong, and we can say it with a straight face. in minneapolis there's a zine called "skins" that's all sappy poetry about the rough life of a racist. obviously a bluff, and funny.
whitehouse seem more of the same. if they were actual pedo-popping fem-killers that's what they would be doing, NOT making art about the topic to draw attention to themselves and get caught. creating controversy around an issue isn't a bad thing, and the fact that people get upset over this shit makes it obvious it needs to be talked about.
everyone that is offended: will shutting whitehouse up end pedophelia? what will? if it can't ever be entirely removed from society, what is the healthiest way for it to be a part of the culture?
also, people who ignore the personalities behind the art (music) they are consuming are just as lame and uncultured as the idiots who pay no attention to anything but what the radio plays for them.

for the record, i don't advocate shutting anyone up, only being honest about the intentions of so-called artists (not that i take issue with your contention necessarily that whitehouse creates "art").
k9d, some of your points are unfortunately uninformed. read the rest of the thread... whitehouse are not having a laugh like you and your friends about sexual stereotypes.
