omg just woke up from the show, fucking awesome. first
cassetteboy played, who were hillarious. in case you dont
know, their music is mainly sample based, they just take
clips of anything and everything you can imagine and
rearrange them into hillarious songs. the two guys from the
band were jumping around in bush masks for the majority of
the time, hitting people and eachother with those blow-up
hammers and baseball bats. at one point the "male" bush
(the other was wearing a dress) jumped into the crowd and
started hanging with all of us. at the end of the set, the
crowd was ready for something wild, and we got it. after a
little interlude set by house dj johnny j, came kenny
muhammed the human orchestra. now, i had no idea what this
guy did, but i soon found out. he is one of the illest
beatboxes i have ever seen. not only did he get the standard
drum sounds from his vocal chords, he also has some wild
shit that sounded exactly like a distorted 909 kick. truly
impressive stuff. he knew exactly how to get the crowd
riled up, telling us that our energy was reflected and he
was returning it back to us. great set, and he was even
cheered for a little encore. then came another short
interlude set, and finally, after some very intense
anticipation, we saw a bearded figure emerge from back
stage. he set up behind his equipment (which had been on
stage the entire time) and opened his laptop. the first
song he played i did not recognize. it was a very cool and
fast track similar to a mix of go plastic and uv (more
meloncholy melody, but a much more digital sound to the
drums). next was an ambient track that consisted of two
synth tracks, one low and the other lower. the bass for
this was truly intense, i literally felt like i was going to
vomit during this set (but i didnt, thank god). after this
was venus no. 7, which was actually one of my least fave
tracks from the whole uv package release, but in a live
environment it was great fun. after, tom picked up his bass
for the first time and rocked another...

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2004-04-04 11:12 [#01131900]

...go plastic/uv mix type song which i did not recognize,
but of course this tmie with his bass playing as well. tom
then switched from his 4 string bass (which he had been
playing) to his six string and played steinbolt with about 5
minutes of more bass twiddling added on to the end. it truly
is mind blowing to see the man play bass. of course, ive
recognized his talent from all his cds, but actually seeing
it is a whole other beast. the accuracy and simplicity with
which he plays is absolutely mind blowing. once the
extension of setinbolt was other came the second most
intense part of the evening: a very long, extended version
of an arched pathway. the crowd just went wild for this. at
one point tom said to us "the louder you yell, the faster we
go!" or something along those lines. this track really got
everyone in the crowd dancing/convulsing to one of the most
maddening tracks on uv. at the end of the song, tom took one
of his water bottles and sprayed the water over the crowd,
which apparently got water on his laptop as well, so he
ended the set (i believe this was the time he was planing on
anyways) and went back behind stage. the crowd basically
forced him to come back out, at one point it really seemed
like he wouldnt go on for an encore; it took him around 10
minutes to come back out and announce "let's see how bill
gate's machine work splashed with water. people from the
crowd were cheering for many songs (i even heard one guy
call out for "big red car" :P). he put on his 4-string bass,
and played one of the most addicting grooves ever!: the bass
groove from come on my selector. this was only a tease
however, as he stopped and started played the bass groove
and drum tracks many times before actually jumping into the
song, but when he did, it was awesome! i really do think
everyone appreciated hearing one of his most crowd friendly
tracks. by the end, i was completely soaked in sweat and in
awe of such an amazing show. and as im reaching the
character limit, ill end this review here.

op: no prob

and btw ill have a few pics up as soon as i finish this roll
and whatnot. the pics of tom will be crap tho, because it
was halfway impossible to get a clear shot of him, due to
being behind a little wall of equipment for nearly the whole
show. but the cassetteboy pics should be a riot.

Truely amazing show. I got right up front on the left and
could see everything he was up to. Only problem were the
fucked up people behind us who wanted to dance but more like
moshing. Pushing and pumping people. But whatever it was so
much fun. When he picked up his laptop and a good deal of
water poured out I thought the set would be over. But he
managed with only one laptop working.

Save the cows!

obstructing my view of tom with them raising their hands in
the air the entire time.

i was there too. i started getting sick that day, so i
couldnt enjoy the show as much as i would have liked to, but
it was great seeing the man himself regardless. i was a
little disappointed he didnt really play much from
ultravisitor though.

a girl near where i was sitting went into epileptic fits
from all the stobe lights at one point. that was kinda
scary.

kenny mohammed is pale immitation of rahzel, he rips off
his kraftwerk 'numbers' and the rest of his scratching
techniques. I thought he was cheese times 10 especially
with his 'positive way of thought bringing humanity to the
next level' bollocks. Squarepusher was good though!

Cassetteboy was fucking gay. the last thing i want to see at
one of these shows is some half ass punk rock political
message. they went for the cheap crude laugh every chance
they could and that shit got so old so fast. i wanted to
throw stuff. this is the bad end of British comedy.

BUT, Kenny oh my god - mind blowingly cool! then energy
alone that it took to do a beatbox set that long is just
hard to imagine
