Modern white people ska pop is horrible, but some of the old
authentic stuff is nice. I'm thinking of getting
this.

Grrrrrrr...

That fucking infuriates me that some people think that's
what it is!

Not your fault though, so don't worry.

Paul, for a corny enjoyable ska album, try getting your
hands on Gangster Fun -- "Time Flies When You're Gangster
Fun".

You might also like *early* Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Primitive Reason, portugese ska band.

OK, let me clarify--I'm thinking most of you morons who said
they hated ska, don't have a fucking clue WHAT ska is. Ska
is NOT 1990s White (mainly) American fuckers, that is either
Punk-Ska or part of the Third Wave Ska Revival, which is,
from what I've heard, mostly bilge. I'm not even talking
about Ska Revival and Two-Tone, which came about in the late
1970s, tho i'm a big fan of The Specials. I'm talking about
Ska, which predates Rocksteady and Reggae... from the early
to mid 1960s, the kind I like being instrumental, so The
Skatalites are doing it for me right now. Ska is akin to
Jazz, not Rock.

if you like first-wave ska there actually is
a bit of 90's ska (third wave) that you'll probably
like too. there actually was a broad spectrum of
ska bands at that time, even though the ska-punk
fusion was the sound most indicitive of the era.
and the sheer concentration of bands of that style
made it kind of annoying after a certain point.

but for good stuff check out hepcat, lets go bowling,
western allstars, new york ska-jazz ensamble. alot of ska
bands (even
skacore) are mixed race. really except for first wave
jamacian ska its always been mixed.

personally i like a bit from every era of ska. i just got a
nice two-tone live comp used recently with some great
versions of cuts by madness, selecter, the specials.

Seriously, check out Toots & The Maytals if you haven't.
It's original stuff, he started in the early 70s and just
released an album this year (which I haven't heard - I only
have the anthology). It's not new American stuff, although
I dig some of that too. I really like 2 Tone stuff too,
especially The Specials' first record.

Marlowe, I know what you are saying. Especially the gritty
dirty recorded tracks. You should check out an old marely
track called burial. It's a rare tosh cover I think. It was
a single. Really incredible, but yeah. I like this
instrumental ska track called clint eastwood. Anyway, gimmie
some track names.
