music is generally performed on stage, not on a laptop.

you'll need a heavily re-inforced laptop to be able to
perform on it.

get a mac and never go back

and viruses)

macs.

drum-machines (drums, preferrably)!

this is silly coz we all like our machines and get used to
them. i use mac and really like it but it doesnt mean its
the best or that you should use one too.

that sony vaio kicks the shit out of an apple powermac in
terms of power (especially for live shows).

your preference, i guess tho.

"windows machines are easily expandable in comparison to

yes, cause often you have to get other stuff to your wintel
machine because of the crappy soundcard and other stuff

would like to use one to see what they are like actually.

they are.. incredibly unpractical if you don't have a
two-button mouse or an external controller for controlling
everything.

too, could it possibly work? ;)

(I´m too fond of my PowerBook, though)

Richard David James used a Sony Vaio on stage when I saw

was a rising techno star :)

The phrase Industry Standarddown my spine. Especially with music hardware.

It's a not a good chill either.

Why must things be deemed an industry standard for people to
think they're worth buying or as a basis for people to buy
it?

If someone tells you it's an industry standard ignore it and
look elsewhere. Read up on the hardware you want (In this
case laptops) and come to your own conclusion about what you
want. Ask yourself obvious questions about what you want
from your laptop and see which one caters to that the
closest.
Do you already have software for a type of computer?
What is your level of knowledge on either platform?

Questions like that are the best way to go about this sort
of decision.

perhaps it does send a chill down your spine!

but if you want to work alongside other record companies and
play the same game you need to at least be able to replicate
a much sought after sound!

seems the apple link stopped working.

I know the VAIO spec is far superior to the mac, but ive
never had a mac and would like to learn them, plus i hear
theyre far more stable. And shouldnt that be priority #1?

lol

are you going by clock speed?

if so, then you cannot compare x86 CPU's to RISC chips

put it this way, a 1GHz G4 PowerPC chip (used in Apple
machines) is the equivalent of a 1.8GHz x86 chip.

it just amazes me how people think a PC chip is better than
Apple just because of clock speed. fact of the matter is
that a RISC chip will perform operations faster than PC
chips because the have:

Reduced
Instruction
Set
Computation

Maybe you should decide on a software platform (Logic,
Cubase, whatever) first and then pick Mac or PC based on
that. That's what I did. I went with Mac and am pretty
satisfied.

The clockspeed game is amusing. It's the number if cycles

Vaio is a good choice for a PC laptop, and of course the
powerbook is just a sweet machine. I'm a mac person, so I'm
biased. I say get what you can afford, where you won't be
going in debt.

I'm looking to finance a dualie G5 this summer, taking a
massive loan out :-/

it depends which interface you prefere, because i think
there both pretty much the same really in proformence.
[provided your pc is made by a person/company that choose
hardware that works well together].
it also depends on what software you were planning on using?
each platform have different stuff. but you can achieve
virtually anything on either platform.

a powerbooks´s soundcard will be just fine for muaicmaking,
it provides low latency and a reasonable quality of sound.
PCMCIA/FireWire & USB soundcards are also available, but
unneccasary - focus on the music and the software instead.

for midi you should use a USB midiinterface.
