and you kids think idm is a bad genre title. cave in's
jupiter is a good album. i once heard them referred to as
math rock. or at least that release. their stuff kind of
evolved. just go listen to the dillinger escape plan
instead. seriously.

Polvo- ''Today's Active Lifestyles'' is a good one, although
it's not really THAT mathematical... sometimes they even
pound away on some powerchords like uneducated dumbasses.

i'm into the REAL math rock, not the stuff they lump in cuz
they come from the midwest.

the stuff with lots of disjointed rhythms. autechres of
rock, basically.

ok, i just listened to a few samples of polvo... ill have to
check some more out then when i do my long listening of
amazon samples.

um.... dillinger was, well.....

i listened to clips from calculating infinity....
not exactly my thing. not sure why really. its kinda too
dark for what i like about the math stuff. the screamy chaos
thing doesnt do me well. i dont even really liek when
fantomas does it. :\

is there stuff by them thats maybe not as hardcore
metal-ish?

ive never heard of math rock before, but.... disjointed
rhythms? the autechre of rock??

...Captain Beefheart!!!!!

check out: (in order of recommendation)
Trout Mask Replica
Lick my Decals Off Baby
Doc At The Radar Station
Bat Chain Puller

ive expressed my love for beefheart many a times on this
board, and i remember calling his music the "autechre of
rock"

not all of it btw.... some is more conventional:
Safe As Milk
Clear Spot
Spotlight Kid

Safe as Milk is a classic... excellent excellent album

btw whats a good introduction to "math-rock"?

if its anything like captain beefheart's jagged-rhythmed
polyphonic stuff im very interested....

hmmmmmm

ill check that stuff out. never heard beefheart before.

check out some don caballero man. 'what burns never returns'
or 'american don'.

oxes is like a drunken caballero trying to hit on yr
girlfriend.
very much american rock though.

hella is very melodic for all its complete disregard for
convention.

paul newman
del rey
the plan
botch (more metal- but at least listen to anthology of dead
ends...great stuff)
shellac (of course)
dianogah
.....

i wouldn't call polvo math rock really...more discordant
indierock, or something.anyway, fantastic band.

Shit, man, I've been listening to TONS of math rock.. I'll
list some.

Dysrhythmia - Virginpusher and I both like this band a
lot. They're an instrumental three piece from Philidelphia
that creates both energetic, frenzied pieces and textural
softer stuff. Their new record "Pretest" is fucking great,
it's on Relapse Records.

The Kickass - Ignore the stupid name and just listen to
the amazing heavy instrumental math rock. I found this cd
in a "shit bin" at my campus radio station and I picked it
up because I liked the album title "Death Metal Is For
Pussies" and this cd just blew me away. Check it out.

Behold...The Arctopus - This is another instrumental three-piece
(just like both other bands I mentioned...hmm) from New
York. The instruments are drums, guitar, and this weird 8
string (maybe 10? don't remember) tapping guitar. Their
website has a song and video for download if you want to see
this maniac play the thing. They're really technical and
cool.

That's all I can think of for now...

June Of '44
Rodan
Dysrhythmia
Fukkeduk
Foe
Art Zoyd
Boud Deun
Upsilon Acrux
The End (Like DEP but draws more from Death Metal IMO)

That's a few of 'em. Many of these bands are Prog
orientated. But I have a feeling that a lot of 'Math rock'
fans would enjoy them though.

album.

get 'what burns never returns' id say its arguably their
best. the production is a lot more clear than american don,
and the material is excellent. also 'single breaking up' has
some nice stuff from the don cab 2 era.

The End rule, they're on Relapse Records which also rules
(usually).

P.S. Dillinger Escape Plan is amazing. I've seen them
twice. Once in October (they were great) and once in
February with The Locust. The most recent time I saw DEP
they were AWFUL, they played a bunch of new shit (or should
I say nu shit) and it was terrible. But when they played
the old stuff it was still rad. At both shows the lead
singer jumped into the crowd and landed on me. The second
time I caught him and he grabbed my collar and I screamed
along into the mic, it was a great time I tell you!
