Lots of slavery everywhere, especially in Africa.

Yet if we chose to go after some of those countries to free
them, we would only be bashed as "an attempt to take over
+/- police the world."

Catch22.

it takes a huge ballzac to accept the blame for the genocide
of 800,000 people.

i'm certainly no expert. but, when it comes to taking
decisive action it seems like the UN suffers from the 'too
many cooks in the kitchen' syndrome.

or...... it takes a tiny sack for letting 800,000 people
die, and THEN accepting responsibility.

btw: we'll all know if American's truely give a shit come
November, watch this space.

that being said, i think the UN can and does play an
irreplaceable diplomatic role in global politics.

they can mobilize aid very well, and the UN offers a nice
semi-neutral ground for diplomatic talks.

but, it's too easy to hide behind the shield of the UN when
faced with really hard decisions, like the one in iraq.
this way, no single nation has to take responsiblity for the
fact that thousands of little kids and their moms are
starving to death every couple of months because nobody
wants to get involed in the steaming pile of shit that are
5,000 year old tribal bonds.

surely gonna spring up around the world now.... i mean,
800,000 dead!!!

not to mention all the other genocides that have happened in
that area

how is the UN more noble and sensible than a single country,
considering their only interest as an organisation is NOT
pissing anyone off?

im HIGHLY opposed to a world government, and the UN
certainly qualifies.

the actual country has nothign to do with the decisions of a
few rich old white dudes and some braindead rednecks who
think any war is a good war.

I'm not happy about the indecisive actions the UN takes (or
not takes), but at least they take their responsibility.

would you expect to see the Bush administration to EVER say
something is their fault?

it IS important for any government to show their people that
they have made mistakes and own up to them.

and we have.

america has made TONS of mistakes in the past, and has tried
to rectify them as best it can. or so it seems.

i guess its all subjective.

i just think when it comes down to it, saddam hussein was
doin bad. he was hurting people in large numbers. we dont
want another hitler, so we took him out.

if that makes us look bad, or they have soem alterior
motives, fine. honestly, to me its some peace of mind to
know he isnt torturing people anymore.

worried about THOSE freaks than us.

dude, its war

no one asks "ok?" when theres a war on.

bin laden didnt ask if its ok to tear down our tallest
buildings.
saddam didnt ask if it was ok to gas his own people.

i hate the cowboy mentality, but the addage is true:
sometimes you do gotta just say screw it and pick the lesser
of two evils.

the majority of the world isn't particularly impressed with
the way the US has acted since 9/11.

I'm hoping Europe will become a superpower to rival the US.
I hate the way the US can do what it likes.

'War on Terrorism' - Lets bomb a few countries and piss them
off even more, yeah thats going to work. idiots. If they
keep acting like this terrorism is going to get worse and
worse. Ever seen the film Brazil?

Its a tricky situation. Democracy is wonderful when it works

(usually in peace time) .
When the singular power of a
dictator is divided into the hands of the public it's
beautiful
(hasn't happened,yet).
There is a down side, not much
gets done. Our representatives seem to spend their entire
workday trying to figure out how not to get blamed for
anything. This creates an atmosphere of indecision, name
calling, blame gaming, etc...

As for Rwanda- that shit has been going on for decades-
the African nations that arent starving to death are fuck
killing eachother in civil wars. The reason nothing was
done about it was because the US didnt step in for once.
There was no oil so our check book stayed on our pocket.
Why doesnt the fucking EUROPEAN UNION step up to the plate
and pony up some cash. You assholes are the first to
cricize the United States but you sure have taken our money
and military help time and again as well as our culture that
you enjoy mocking, but copy every chance you get.

Bogala sounds nice but you are wrong.

The reason democracy doesnt work is special interest groups.
Until there is some kind of meaningful campaign finance
reform, elections will always be swayed by big business.
Let's just hope the current thieves in office have galled
the sheep of america enough to actually vote.

I agree there godataloss. Campaign finance as it stands is
fucking horribly corrupt. I don't want a Nader in office,
though. As for the Euros, I don't see any differences from
the US..You take any chance you can get to hock something

then there are a thousand groups trying to be Radiohead and
