anybody know a good one that i can download? preferably for free.
something simple, similar to the early ones (like the one produced for bbc computers) where you type in a word/sentence + the computer says it.. often with some hilarious mispronounciations.
im quite keen on the whole stephen-hawking style voice too - nothing too slick/realistic.
any suggestions?

this one, you don't even need to download.
http://www.lhs.com/realspeak/demo/
It's an online demo. When you have written what's suppose to be said (maximum 100 characters =/)
you get it in a .wav-file (maximum 22 khz)...
It's good though, and it's not hard to create (longer) pieces with it, just chop it up in sentences and then put them together in a .wav-editor.

that program (even the demo) has the following languages...
Belgian Dutch Brazilian Portuguese Canadian French Cantonese Chinese Castilian Spanish Danish Dutch European Portuguese French German Italian Japanese Korean Mandarin Chinese Mexican Spanish Norwegian Polish Russian Swedish UK English US English
... and it sounds good! Even the swedish one makes good pronounciations.

MBROLA (not crappy, requires some effort)
DocTalk (the people who originally made it fell off the edge of the Internet, so I put it on my site)
AnalogX SayIt has already been linked...
Here is another web thing from AT&T's research people.

yeah but
1) Only Windows 2000 / Windows XP has it, Mac have had it for well over 10 years
2) As far as I know, you can't get it to speech synth ANY selected text, you can only get it to speak alert boxes and error boxes and stuff
i might be wrong on that last bit - haven't booted up XP or 2000 on Virtual PC for a while
