Grieg is Great

Quite an overlooked composer in general, famous mainly for
Peer Gynt and his Piano Concerto in A minor. Those with
soulseek, I recommend you download his lyric pieces,
particularly [4-1] valse impromptu and [4-7] elegi, and also
his Funeral March in memory of Rikard Nordraak :: excellent
stuff.

my dad took me to grieg's piano concerto when i was pretty
young. fist orchestral performance id ever been to.
really enjoyed it. particularly because it was such a sold
out performance that our seats were situated in the choral
section of the hall - behind the orchestra itself.
so technically - we were hearing the piece in reverse.. if
you see what i mean.

I've been fortunate enough to see Grieg's Piano Concerto
live, also! It was great! I also remember seeing a Beethoven
Piano Concerto, and it resonated so much, I was moved to
tears -- classical music is best heard live, no doubt... the
vibrations are immense. I also saw a Rachmaninov Piano
Concerto live, but it wasn't so hot :D It was his
little-known First Piano COncerto, not a spot on his
others!!

sounds good.
i definitely agree with you about classical music having
more resonance when seen live. its been a long time since
ive seen anything like that in the flesh - not counting the
warp/sinfonietta tour of course..

d-steak | the very idea of my dad taking me to ANY kind of
sporting event as a kid actually made me laugh out loud.
thats not his thing at all.

I have only heard 2 musical pieces by Grieg, both left me
slightly stunned and lost for words, one was called
something like 'In the hall of the mountain king' I don't
remember the other one it was on an old 45 record.

probably "morgenstemning" (don't know what it's called in
english)

"hall of the mountain king" is originally called
"dovregubbens hall," but that's in norwegian.

Grieg has done several good musical pieces... you should
just get it all.

although.. he has a few boring ones as well... I don't know
their names (something anonymous like "opus 4" or something
like that...)

I found the entirety of Peer Gynt scary...

especially that part with those people in the desert who
cuts their throats and shit...

Yes, I must have heard it when I was about 10 and remember
feeling how threatening it sounded. My parents bought me a
record player and a load of old 45s ( mainly of classical
music) as a birthday present, best present I ever got as a
kid.

Drunken Mastah, thanks for the info, I think i will check
him out a bit more. I should also start listening to more
classical music, it has been a long time since my last
listen.

alltime favorite classical piece: Ravel - Bolero

co: yeah, a few of his works sound almost generic, but
you'll have to expect that from someone as productive as
him.

funnily enough, one of the best presents i got as a kid was
an old record player + a few vinyls.
hall of the mountain king was amongst these.

I would be very grateful if you would allow me to get a few
songs from you, maybe you can recommend some of his best?.
Can you give me the link to the soulseek site by any chance?
I need to download it again. Cheers.

Did you ever play me the lyric pieces, i really liked the
funeral march and i think i remember peer gynt.

I have been trying to locate pachelbel works at the moment
apart from the canon in d, i really want to hear what his
other stuff is like.
