"I could beat him fine if his energy bar didn't rise all
the time :s
"

It doesn't rise constantly. It only happens when he is
catching his breath. That's why you've got to (try to) stay
close to him. Every now and then he'll just stand still and
you can see and hear him breathing heavily. That's when his
energy regenerates. But whilst he's doing that he's wide
open to attack. Actually I thought it was an advantage
rather than a disadvantage.

Also, if he does happen to catch you in his jaws, move the
controlstick around and push A-button repeatedly to make him
let go sooner. The longer you stay in his jaws the more
hearts it costs.

Metal Gear Solid is a really strange game. I hadn't realised
there would also be jokes in it :-p The programmers must
have had a good sense of humor.

I just watched that piece of cinema when you've rescued that
professor guy from Revolver Ocelot, and they're talking
about Meryl. But the prof. can't remember her
codec-frequency. And then he mentions it's on the back of
the package. Haha! And I was thinking: "Package? What
package? I haven't found a package yet.
" Nice ;-) I love
stuff like that.

And then when you get in contact with Meryl, and Snake
wonders how she managed to hide those keycards. Lol.
"Women have more hiding-places". I can't believe they
put that line in a Nintendo game. Nintendo! The same company
that once removed the blood from Mortal Combat! And now
they're making naughty jokes and cutting off hands in a
Nintendo-exclusive.

Well I'm liking this game alot. I can't wait to find out
what happens next. Something fishy has to be going on... two
people "suddenly" dying of heartattacks... YEAH RIGHT!

Haha, the first time I rented MGS for PS1, way back in '98,
I was stuck on the part where I needed Meryl's frequency...
because I rented it and I didn't HAVE the freakin'
''package''! And this was before I knew about Gamefaqs. But
the Colonel eventually calls you and tells you the frequency
anyway.

But not until I spent a half hour running around the base
looking for ''a package''.

Heart attacks... be afraid, be very afraid. You'll see.

MGS rocks. Goofy as heck game. There's all kinds of injokes
in Twin Snakes you probably won't get unless you've played
Sons of Liberty, Snake's Revenge, Metal Gear, Solid Snake,
Ghost Babel, etc. Hideo Kojima is good to his hardcore
fans.

And Metal Gear Solid 3 is going to destroy the world.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes = original Metal Gear Solid
times a million

However, i was a bit put off by the fact that Naomi and Mei
Ling no longer had accents. I know its nitpicky, but i miss
those accents.

the item stuff might be annoying, but i think it belongs to
the game, as do the ribbons.

the zombies are quite lame, i like the silent hill monster
more but resident evil just has the right combination of
mysticality, soldiers and a big evil corporation :)

i heard the backgrounds are done differently in res4 (not
rendered is the correct term?)

Graphics in Resi 4 are going to be all real time generated,
like in sections of Code Veronica. Also, I agree the bad
camera/controls and ribbons/items are part of the game and
genuinely add to the tension. It's the only way to replicate
the sort of fumbling with a door/to reload a gun that you
see so often in horror films.

I agree about the poor controls and fixed camera-angles.
They really help to make the game scarier. It makes you feel
just as helpless as when you would actually be confronted
with a zombie yourself. Just a regular human being, not with
the typical videogame superpowers. Always being low on ammo
helps alot too. I like all those things.

But not being able to carry more than 6 items... I dunno.
What's the point of it? It happens to me way too many times
that I'm exploring a new part of the mansion... see lots of
items... but I can't pick them up. I either have to move on
and come back for them later. Or track back all the way to
the nearest itembox to make space in the inventory. For me
it adds nothing but frustration. If you would be allowed to
just drop your items wherever you liked... than I might be
able to live with not being allowed to carry more stuff. But
the fact that you can only dump them in the itembox is....
aaargh! It doesn't make the game scarier, just more annoying
imo.

Same with the ribbons. I think having only having a very
limited amount of savepoints in the game already adds more
than enough tension. What's the advantage of only being
allowed to save a limited number of times.

Sadly it has already been confirmed that atleast the ribbons
will be back in RE4. I'm not sure about the itemboxes yet...
oh well.

The most scared I've ever been by the game (so far!) is when
one of the "dead" zombies came back to life. Holy shit!
I had just found the lighter and the gasoline. And in the
manual I had already read that they could come back alive
unless you burn their bodies. So I was going around burning
all the zombies I had already shot.

And then I came to a body somewhere on the 2nd floor. I
selected 'use' for the lighter again. She already kneeled by
the zombie to put it on fire... and then all of a sudden it
stood back up!!

I was so unprepared for that :-p I litteraly jumped from my
seat, haha. It was a great moment.

I am still loving MGS:TTS by the way :-)
What an amazing game. I'm finally starting to get
comfortable with the controls as well. It's a hell of lot of
fun hiding from the guards in a corner... and then sneaking
up on them from behind to strangle them. And then to hide
their bodies ofcourse :-D Brilliant. Earlier tonight I
strangled one whilst he was relieving himself at the
urinoir, lol.

I also can't believe that yesterday I managed to defeat a
tank with my bare hands! That was a really good fight
though, I loved it.

And just now I had my first fight (I presume he'll be back)
with that Ninja guy. I love how much personality they gave
the bad guys. He was just laughing at me when I tried to
shoot him. But then when I put away my guns he gave me that
speech that fighting with your hands was the only real way
to fight. It's all so well done.

I also had fun shooting holes in the gamecube set up in that
room :-p And shooting at Mario to hear him make 1up sounds,
haha. Nice little touches there.

"There's all kinds of injokes in Twin Snakes you probably
won't get unless you've played Sons of Liberty, Snake's
Revenge, Metal Gear, Solid Snake, Ghost Babel, etc.
"

Yeah well... sadly this is my first Metal Gear ever :-/
I'm probably missing a hell of a lot, I know. For instance I
have no idea who Gray Fox is supposed to be (apparantly
that's the true identity of that Ninja). I confronted him
once in Zanzibar or something? What? I had no idea what was
going on there. Let's hope it's not too important for the
overal storyline.

Classic story about you trying to find the "package" too
:-p
I really thought that was one of the best jokes in a
videogame ever. Actually refering to things outside of the
game. One of those guys on the Codec also told me today that
I need to use my "instincts as a gamer", hehe :-p

Did you fight Psycho Mantis yet? VERY clever fight, you'll
love it.

Don't worry too much about the story. There's references and
things, but nothing too important to note. On the PS1
version, the game gave you the option to read up on Snake's
previous adventures as an extra feature, dunno about Twin
Snakes, but check it out if does. And you should consider
making an effort to play and beat the rest of them, they're
all great... Metal Gear Solid 3 is still a half a year away,
and just by watching the previews and trailers, I recognize
a million little ''wink wink'' sequences and touches... and
one very very ''Big'' one...

...

I love the way the game blurs the lines between video game
and reality, too... Sons of Liberty blurred the lines even
more, some would say to a ridiculous extent... hehe... lots
of fun. In fact, that game fucked me up in the head so bad,
that I had to start a topic about the bizarre events the
night I was near the climax of the game. Don't go looking
for that topic though, it might spoil it. You've gotta play
it someday.

"Did you fight Psycho Mantis yet? VERY clever fight,

"

Nope... not yet. I think I've only briefly seen him in one
of the cutscenes. And some people have talked about how he
tried to read their mind. Hm... well i can't wait to meet
him personally. I'll keep you updated on my progress.

I'm waiting for the huge pricedrop of the PS2 (around the
time when PS3 is almost coming out), and then I'll probably
get me one to catch up on all those great games I'm missing
now. Altough I had no idea there were so many Metal Gear
games! I knew there were Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2 for
NES. And then Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 for the playstation.
What are all those other ones you talked about?

I definitly plan to check it out though :-) I'm beginning to
realise just how excellent this series is. Also, I'm
beginning to think Konami is trying to get some sort of a
"say no to nuclear energy" message across? I've already seen
several cutscenes (actual filmfootage) talking about all the
disadvantages.

Metal Gear- NES- started it all. Very hard game that I've
NEVER beaten, but I've tried a million times. It's a bit
underwhelming now, but compare it to other games that were
coming out at the time, and it's pretty impressive. Some
rudimentary stealth gameplay, which was pretty fresh back
then.

Worst. Translation. Ever. And you thought Final Fantasy 2
was bad.

Snakes Revenge- NES- not very important, a bit of a half
assed game. ''Metal Gear'' isn't even in the title. It's a
fun curiousty, but it's the odd one out in the MG universe.

Solid Snake- MSX game that I didn't play until 2002.
EXCELLENT game! Emulation is probably the only way you'll
ever play this game. This is the real Metal Gear 2. Like the
original, but improved in every way. 8 bit graphics, billion
bit gameplay.

Metal Gear Solid 1- PS1- this is the best. You don't really
need to play it since you have Twin Snakes. It's exactly the
same except for the graphics and the lack of first person
shooting. This is the 'real' MGS for me, though! This is the
one I'll play when I want to experience Shadow Moses again.
Sentimental value for me.

Metal Gear Solid- Ghost Babel- Gameboy Color- the best
Gameboy game ever made. NES Metal Gear graphics combined
with PS1 Metal Gear gameplay and atomsphere. It's a
completely stand-alone game, and it's worth playing. I don't
know if you'll ever find a hard copy, but give the ROM a
shot.

Metal Gear Solid 2- PS2- no, THIS is the best. You only play
as Snake for the first quarter of the game, though. The
other guy you control is a nerd. This game is gorgeous, it
takes place in a prettier environment than the first MGS.
Mind blowing for a 2001 game.

This game is fucked up. Seriously. You'll beat the game and
not have a clue what just happened. Then you'll beat it
again and be even more confused. That's the biggest knock on
the game, but I thought it was a riot.

Metal Gear Solid 3- this will be the best game of the 128
bit era.

I read something about that... got any specifics?

Tell you what I'd love as an old school platformer (now VJ
has shown there to be a market for it)- a remake/update of
Gunstar Heroes, but using both analogue sticks- one for
movement, the other for shooting. That would be fantastic.

WOW! After our little conversation yesterday I went back to
my 'cube and played MGS until 4:30 in the morning, lol. That
was a little extreme. (altough I sat here and talked with
you about nintendo until in my timezone it was).

Anyway, I fought Psycho Mantis! :-p Fantastic! Already high
in my topten list of Best Videogame Momements Ever! Haha,
this game is genious. I loved it. Especially when he wanted
to prove his mental powers to me. "Oh I see you enjoy
playing Silicon Night games. Did you like Playing Eternal
Darkness?
" And I was like: "Well that must have been a
lucky guess, seeing as I bought one SK-game, they just
presume I also have another?" But he went on: "I see you
also like adventure games! Did you enjoy playing The Legend
of Zelda? And I see you also like action games. How did you
like Super Mario Sunshine?
" By then I had figured out he
must be reading my memory card. I laughed and I laughed. How
do they come up with stuff like that? It seems like such a
serious game, but in reality it's really goofy like you
said.

Then he asked me to put my controller on the ground and he
would move it with his psychic powers. Hehe, I pretty much
knew what was coming, but it was still entertaining to watch
my controller move over the ground a little with the
rumble.

Ofcourse I couldn't get anywhere in the fight, he killed me
3 times. And then the 4th time I finally got the call from
the colonel telling me I needed to change to the other
controller port so he wouldn't be able to read my mind. LOL!
I have never ever felt so involved with a game as a gamer. I
had to keep walking over to my gamecube to keep plugging the
controller in all the different ports. I loved every second
of it. "Snake, is there any reason you can't use
controller port number 3?
"

When it was all over that was a strangely emotional scene as
well. That conversation with Psycho as he was dying. He said
some pretty intelligent things. It actually got me thinking.

Thanks for your description of all those games. I was just
looking to see if I could find any of them on eBay. And a
game called "Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance" also came up.
It's described a new version of Sons Of Liberty, improved
upon in almost every possible way. It sounds like you should
probably check it out!

I'll be on the lookout for the NES-original. It'll be
entertaining to see how much they were able to do on such a
limited system. Did it already have such complex story as
Twin Snakes? I'm amazed at how much cutscenes are in this
game. You're watching movies almost just as much as actually
playing. I don't mind at all though because the story is so
much fun :-) Theoretically they could have had just as good
a story in a NES game. With clever conversation instead of
pretty movies. Altough if they did, I'm sure it was ruined
by that bad translation you talked about. Hm. But worse than
FF2? I can hardly imagine that :-p "I was beaten twice?
How can it be? Gwaaaaaah!
"

I don't really know alot about emulations. I've never played
any roms. Is that MSX game really worth it? Well maybe I
could check it out after I've played the NES original and
the gameboy version and have really fallen in love with 2D
Metal Gear aswell.

From your description though, I'm most excited to play Sons
Of Liberty!

"Sons of Liberty blurred the lines even more, some would
say to a ridiculous extent... hehe... lots of fun. In fact,
that game fucked me up in the head so bad, that I had to
start a topic about the bizarre events the night I was near
the climax of the game.
"

I will be strong and not go looking for that topic, but it
sounds great :-D You make it sound like they took the Psycho
Mantis fight and went even further from there on. I can
imagine it put some players off (as I've actually read quite
a bit of negative talk about MGS2), but after this game I
think that I would actually really like something like that
:-)

Ha, don't expect the NES Metal Gear to be Shakespeare! Nor
the enemies to be very clever! You're just a guy running
around shooting and hiding, on your way to blow up Metal
Gear. And that's it. But it's still really fun, if you enjoy
that good old fasioned sadomasoch. Tons of weapons and
gadgets, and the bad translation only increases the fun
factor. You'll want to get further and talk to everyone,
just to read all the stupid non-sensical things they say
(see bottom of post... I have no idea what Big Boss was
talking about, but at least it was fun).

As far as the MSX Solid Snake, if you really get into Metal
Gear, especially the 2D ones, I think it's a must play. It's
not unlike Dracula X (Castlevania)- Rondo of Blood...
another amazing game that nobody over here has played, but
is well worth the effort. But it can be a major hassle to
find the right combination of roms/emulators, etc if you're
not experienced with it. I'm pretty sure I used
Zophar.net to get it up and running. There's a whole
section for MSX. Finding the rom is a different story. I wish
I still had it on me. If you're a n00b to emulation, you
might not want to bother. Figuring out how to run old
obscure things like that can make a grown man cry.

Ceri- Viewtiful Joe 2 is on the way to GC and PS2 on October
20/04. It'll be pretty much the same as the other one, the
screenshots look no different. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't
fix it. And VJoe1 is coming out for PS2 soon, and you can be
Dante from Devil May Cry, that's pretty cool.

A new Gunstar Heroes would rock. And a new Dynamite Headdy!
Treasure was the bomb.

Finished Metal Gear Solid a couple of days ago. (on
difficulty-setting "normal") Really good game. And probably
one of the best endings I've ever seen in a game. The entire
boss-fighting sequence was really good too. A proper climax
to such a story-driven game :-)

Problem is I can't really see myself playing through it
again anytime soon because of all the cinema. Once you know
the storyline it's not even nearly as much fun to watch
everything. Maybe I'll go back to it in a couple of months
time. I would like to improve on my
stealth-technique, start collecting those dogtags etc. They
put enough things in there to draw you back... which I like.
But if I did it now it'd be like watching the same movie 2x
in a row.

Next up is probably Metroid Prime. It's good to finally
finish some of my gamecube-games :-D First viewtiful joe,
now MGS.

"You're just a guy running around shooting and hiding, on
your way to blow up Metal Gear. And that's it.
"

So pretty much standard NES-gameplay eh? Well after Twin
Snakes I just want to play it anyway. If only to see the
origins of the series :-) I'll find out soon enough if I
like it. And if I can find the patience to actually try and
finish it. I have a feeling that for those old really
hard NES-games you need proper motivation to complete them.
Motivation like having saved up your allowance for months to
be able to buy a game. Whilst now I have so many games to
choose from... and I dunno. Some of the NES and SNES games I
bought recently seem really good... but I just can't seem to
find the time or willpower to sit down with them for several
hours and really get anywhere.

That screenshot is classic though :-p Lol. Great stuff! It's
properly supposed to be humoristic, but the translations
just makes is seem so weird. Jokes about cute little sailor
suits seem appropriate next to some of the toilet-humor in
Twin Snakes. ;-)
