well, i would say that the sound just needs to be made a bit bigger in general. like maybe it needs a touch of reverb on some of the piano and maybe widen the stereo up a bit in the midrange. it's hard to say though if you haven't finished it yet. and adding vocals will direct attention away from the music a bit so yeah.. it's hard to say. good start though. sounds promising.

indeed, very nice cruncy beats...totally digging the bass coming in...that fourth chord sounds like it's a bit off...it needs a harmonizing note...otherwise:
can't wait to hear the finished piece!

are you gonna put in the "na na na na's?" if so try doing 'em real distorted or vocoderish. niiice.

>warphex thanks mate :)
>evolume the piano is from an original NIN sample - i'm trying to eradicate the NIN samples, so when i get some sheet music for this i'll get rid of it completly - then i can effect it till my hearts content ;) thanks for the encouragement
>forck_02lynix yeah, i know it's a bit discordant - it's not the bass though, rather the piano in the background (i think so anyways)....maybe a bit of EQ will fix it,, or when i get the notations and put my own pianos in. as for the "na na naaaahs" i dunno if i'll put vocals or synths - as you suggest, a vocoded one might be good, but i have a major dislike for vocoded vocals....been too overused by pop pap! but i'll definately give it some thought :)

Oh shit, so crunchy, split my molars right down the middle. Pivotal moment for me is 1:54... I hear what I call a ''magic note''.

Then you'll lose a fan. When I say ''magic note'', that implies something good, not something bad. You leave it.

Damn those notes are fucking sweet so who cares about the beat (beat is good by the way)! That chord/note progression is kinda wrong. You've got a wrong note in there definitely and think you know it. Its goes from deep and serious to slightly dark as a result. That slighlty off note needs changing up until that point would seriously love to here the final version. The bassline could do with some reverb or chorus or whatever fits. Most of the comments in the other posts I agree with too. The danger with a track like this is the bassline is so strong that you have to really think about introducing the right kinda notes and progression to go with it.

On the synth bit you've introduced, you've got one or two notes and they just don't sound right. Very enjoyable all the same. Gonna check out some NIN now.

thanks man :)
yeah i know that there's a bad note in there, it's the NIN sample (guitar+piano) conflicting with the bass (minimoog+maelstrom). The bass notes are right though, i just think that Trent never intended both the main melody for the intro and the main bassline to coexist in the track.
btw the NIN sample is from a very early version of TDTWWA that was never used, but kinda resurrected for the Still EP.
I am in a bit of a dilema - the part where the big bass comes in (after the filtered bass) was where I was gonna put vocals, but i've tried recording some quick ones, and it doesn't quite fit. also i've added that little 1 bar break where its just the drum on its own - i'm fucking buzzing off that so much right now! and with vocals over that part, it detracts from that single bar, so i'm thinking of pushing the vocals back even further....the problem is, i wanna bring the tone of the track right down to a kind of intimate sound, close and tight....not massive bass and beats.....then for the coda (i think that's the right term) i wanna bring everything back up, layering it all and adding layers, but i just don't know how to do it!!
arrrgh!

Yeah I had a blue covered noise remix CD EP going back say 10/11 years. Listening to that CD I thought thats what NIN were all about. I know of certain songs ('head like a hole') but never really made a massive effort to find out more about them. I knew of the Aphex connection so to that end I was interested. I can't recall whether loads of people were into them at school or not; otherwise I would have bound to have heard more.

yeah, the blue one is a remix of Broken
Trent's music usually changes with every release, but you can always tell if its him by the level of production and just the "feel" of the tracks.
i got into NIN when i first heard We're In This Together....reminded me of the Quake soundtrack (which i found was NIN!)
after listening to Metallica, and real trance (i mean stuff from 1997-1998) i was striving for something more complex, and NIN gave me that complex soundscape!
