Ok. I wasn't entirely sure myself. Its just something I've
wondered about from time to time.

I helped you out there :)

But i guess people are to consumed in their own genre/style
they don't appreciate others, i.e. I saw this topic lately
on a other mb, about this new artist "gravenhurst" on warp,
people judged the guy before even hearing his music cause he
referse to music artists that aren't in the genre/style
people listen to; they are so stupid and definately not open
minded

Yeah I'd agree that there are a number of posters who 'spam'
but don't bother to check out others music. I mean I don't
want to be excused of double standards on any issue but I
think out of courtesy if some has commented on your track
then one should return the favour. That said I wouldn't want
to enforce it or seen to be Nazi over it. A lot of people
just don't have good manors and thats just the way it goes I
guess.

i was reading the instructions on a Lady's Feminine Wash
product in the walgreens the other day, and it said to only
listen to other peoples tracks if they listen to mine

i like it when people check my tracks, but i don't like the
idea of people feeling obligated to listen, or people
feeling that i am obligated to listen to theirs because they
listened to mine.

i sure as hell don't listen to make anyone feel good; i
listen because i'm interested in hearing what people are up
to and have heard some great music as a result. i like to
give positive feedback. just so you know, though, i won't
tell you if your music is shit. you say you don't mind
criticism, but we both know you can't take it! : P

i am unquestionably, however, my own biggest fan.

a given? obviously not, promo. otherwise, why would people
repeatedly refer to listening to someone's tracks as a
"favor" to be returned?

why would people then list the expectation of reciprocation
as a motivation for listening to other's music?

There are certain people here who I would say have no sense
of fun about their music making, seeing it as an
intellectual artform, and wanting to be taken as a serious
musician. The same goes when people review other peoples
tracks, some people are just far too serious.

plus you musn't be on the same intellectual level as myself

mm, well, I don't know about my own music, but I try to take
other people's music serious. I mean, I try to give real
criticism not just something like "cool" or something. try
to really say something.
this is also why I don't listen to everything, only now and
then - it just takes me some time to give a good listen and
write something decent.
I don't know if that's what you mean by taking people's
music too serious..?

(that said, I always like it when the music makes me laugh -
be it something in structure or a sound.)

I completely agree with plaidzebra on this.

I truely appreciate it when someone listens and comments,
but noone should feel pressured.

I therefore dislike it VERY much when, say, person A posts
in a music thread by person B to say they will listen and at
the same time asking if person B would now please check out
person A's own music, as some kind of trade - especially if
person A's music threads already get a reasonable amount of
attention.

presumably when people are asking for feedback they want to
know what you think about it... perhaps they would like to
hear your suggestios as to how to make it better... granted
they may not accept the criticisms, but i always figured
they'd rather hear my suggestions than just some goofy
response that has nothing to do with anything... i mean, if
a track strikes me a certain way, then i'll say what it is i
have to say... but as far as i know, a lot of the artists
are looking for constructive criticism... am i wrong?

(If you're refering to me in Archrival's thread earlier this
evening) I did that because I know Archrival likes my stuff
and also that he likes Jazz. I wasn't even notifying "the
general populance" of its existance until promo suggested I
make a new thread for it. (If you're not refering to me,
sorry for getting paranoid :-)

Deadeight: Yeah, I like constructive criticism, so long as
it's worded politely it's very useful. Sometimes, if a track
is really awful and I can't say anything nice/positive about
it, I just won't mention that I DLed it.

He he, I was about to argue that I don't do it very often at
all, if it was directed at me ;-)

Some people on here whose music I really like (and regularly
comment on) have never commented on my music. Doesn't
bother me really, perhaps they share my "If you can't say
anything nice, don't say anything at all" attitude and just
don't like it!

i think the same way as braindance here

ive seen people wreck things for themselves by taking
themselves so seriously that they abuse people for having a
different taste.

but really, over-intellectuallising on either the author or
the listeners behalf takes a lot of fun out - which should
be the point!

i always try to listen to people's tracks. the only reason i
don't do so more often is because i'm on a phone
connection.

i try to return criticism to everyone whenever they critique
me, but it isn't always possible. besides, if i were too
consumed with my own music - then i'd lack inspiration
completely, because other music is what gives me inspiration
the most amongst other things. :)
