'I Wish' was nice. You've got quite a big sound. You're
using a lot of 70s samples. Sounds like they come from 70s
cop shows or something.

"You're using a lot of 70s samples. Sounds like they come

true, true, its all about being creative tho, I sample all
the time but im also trying to be creative (choppin and
cuttin up the samples to pieces so u cant even recognize!!
;) and adding a lot of stuff on top

I like the samples you're using. You've got quite a big
sound as a result of the samples you're using, be nice if
there was some addition of some more IDM type notes to give
it more of an IDM flavour aside from just repeating the same
samples over and over again. And I think your tracks need
more build up and breakdown. Strong samples but something
else is needed in order for your tracks to reach that
complete feeling. On the whole the samples that u use are
strong enough to carry the listener's interest but your
tracks need that extra zing I reckon.

Remeber these are not meant to be instrumental tracks (this
is not RJD2 or DJ shadow stuff). These are just hip hop
intrumentals that MCs cant get if they want to drop some
rhymes on them.

All these tracks are made to have some rap on them, so I
want them pretty minimalistic.

And I really dont want that IDM flava or whatever on these
tracks...

Well sure for that purpose I can understand. I still
downloaded a couple of these tracks 'cause they're nice.

Anyways Archival I've bumped my thread for my latest track
if you want to check it out. I like the old 70s funk
elements too as you might notice.

Beat 777: The Snare sounds a bit too bright, other than that
I can't really fault it.

Comp Mix: Sounds a bit like Prefuse style stilted beats with
the jumps you use. This is almost like something off the
Lovage album actually... very nice. Again, I don't like the
sound of the snare very much, it's just a bit too clean,
bright and synthetic.

I Wish: Very nice! A sort of "last night of the cruise" type
old sound, wouldn't be out of place on an Avalanches
release.

Jewelz: The strings section sounds a bit "murky" in places.
Perhaps too full a sound from lots of layering? Good track
though, a sort of "Marching Band" feel to the percussion.

NYC part: This time it's the "shaker" instrument (whatever
it is, rainstick or rhythm egg, etc.) that sounds a bit too
bright and loud in the mix! Again a nice stilted sort of
beat, but one that is still easy to follow.

Overall: Sorry for being overly picky with the
levels/quality of snare sounds, but it's the only real
"constructive criticism" I could make. Overall some good
work :)

Short Jazz track I've just finished (less of it is sample
based than you'd think!) The Jazz, Man. Comments welcome.

Email me and I'll sort you out with some good hip hop snare
sounds :)

Reason for brevity: The Sax and Rhodes both use a
combination of single note and bar long samples,
unfortunately, I don't have samples of many single notes, so
it was limited how much I could pad it out. I didn't want it
to be too repetative with the bar long samples and similarly
wanted the continuity of using the samples from the same
source. I didn't want to use any other instruments as I was
aiming to keep it as if it was just a jazz quartet playing
it.

Glad you liked it though.

Has a real 70s vibe. Sounds like some of the stuff on Black
Jazz Records. Remember those Soul Jazz rereleases thats what
that track sounds like.

very nice premier type beats, although I feel you're a tad
overzealous concerning the hihats, and by emphasis buries
the all-important bassdrums and snares, this considering an
mc has yet to spit on those beats.

I love this shit! send it to someone big and have them do
something on it! You could probably make it as a producer.

I also have this friend who makes beats. check them out

swedish Daddy Boastin (the swedsish heads knows who he is).

I know Cappadonna from Wu Tang a little so im hoping to get
him on a beat plus ShabazzThe Disciple (at least I got
Cappas cell phone number so we will se how that works..)

well man...the problem is definatly that most rappers i know
(i'm not mc'ing meself) are danish, but I have been talking
about some english lyrics with some of them.

can you email me, and we'll talk more. Top beats on the
wishlist are definatly "I wish" and "Comp mix"...

let's hook up

Got two more beats up...

the hip hop instrumentals "Como" and "Luck Me".

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2004-03-24 15:54 [#01116695]
Points: 23533 Status: Moderator | Followup to Archrival: #01116558 | Show recordbag

Como is nice, very clean and "up" sounding. Sort of Tony
Costa style production, with a positive, mediterranean feel.
The little snare drum rolls work really well too.

Me Luck has a nice bounce to the rhythm. I'd consider losing
that low brass (sax?) it sounds a bit too much like a comedy
sad "wa-wa-wahhhhh" and doesn't fit with the feel of the
rest of the track. I like the flanged synth at 0.44, it has
a nice 80s feel to it. Almost as if it could be on a Miami
Vice soundtrack.

Overall, two more quality tracks :)

Everybody complains about that sax sound :( , yes it sounds
cheesy but thats the way I like it sometimes ;)

the only one who like that sax sound is my sister, but I
think about getting rid of it, to many peeps hate that part
("What the fuck! take away that silly shiT!").

thanx for you comments Ceri! and thanks for the snares

Como sounds like it would fit Busta Rhymes!

Me Luck was good, but I agree about the sax (it sounds like
a low-pitched mute trumpet to me, actually...).

what do you use when making beats?
