Which do you prefer? The former? The latter? Neither?
BOTH?

You, the public, decide.

Vinyl crackle can be used for good. Tape hiss is pure evil.

NEW CONTENDER: Low-bitrate distortion!!!111

Now THAT's evil. I'm quite partial to a bit of retro tape
hiss.

I have a soft spot for both. "incomplete without surface
noise"

BOTH

but yes
low bitrate compression noise is the evil.

People have send to me in the past; 'Oh nice white noise
effect or cool tape hiss effect on your track' and I'm like
'no its real because it actually came from a tape'. He he
he.

little chime, has gone down in history

i 'like' saving my drum loops as 32 kbps mp3

adds a special quality to it all :)

my preference either must go to the "too much fluff on the
stylus causing it to skate right across the record leaving a
permanent reminder to you of how stupid you are not to check
your stylus before playing a record" or "stacking of too
many records on top of each other (usually more than 5)
causing the records to lose grip and play at some random
(less than 45rpm) speed and possibly come to a complete halt
therefore the only sound to can hear is the records rubbing
together".

One day, musicians with professional quality studios will
use old software/gear to get that "late ninties" horrible
mp3 quality, just like people use expensive gear/plugins to
get 70s sounding distortion now...

re: stacking, you can get a similar effect by overtightening
record centres (using tape label backing and sellotape).
Sometimes this also adds a high pitched squeek to the
recording too.

A record of mine skipped in quite a good, locked groove way
due to having a tiny candle wax fleck in the groove. It
didn't make that annoying click that skipping records do,
but did actually sound like an intentional locked groove. I
"fixed" it by running my thumbnail along that section of the
groove, but it does make you wonder if it would be possible
to devise an undoable, good sounding, record skipping
technique.

I guess that's an interesting point. I always used to love
messing around with old tapes, taking them apart and
reversing them, magnetizing bits, cutting and splicing with
sellotape :D i'd like to try something like that. CDs
microwaved for just a second or two sound very odd too,
sometimes good, sometimes awful.

- brownnoise
Argh!
There is one AE track with nice noise/hiss used... I forgot

vinyl crackle is good only when it comes from an actual
record. i used to think it sounded neat on a track when the
artist put it in, but not really. i recorded a different
version of an old song of mine a couple months ago, and the
tape i used had some serious hiss on it. at first i thought
it sucked, but i realized it just added to the atmosphere of
the track. did anyone actually read all of this?

it's not really that i like either one more than the other.
but the hiss added to the one track, and the crackle sounds
good when it's either: ripped from the actual vinyl, or if
i'm listening to vinyl. that's all.

sempoo: analog recording is the way to go! i've been doing
it for the past 4 years (the expanse of my music creating
career). i love it.

an artist, Reynolds, has made a record entirely from the
sound of blank tapes....

it's on the Trente Oiseaux label, you can find a sound
sample at aquariusrecords.org... here, in......
real audio (sorry)

reminds me of some of oren ambarchi's more bass-grounded
work... only very mucky...

yeah I thought I remembered learning about pink noise... but
brown-noise seemed suspicially fart-joke worthy... so it was
hard to be sure.

: )

it's a nice label... not a very big one at all, but has some
nice music...
'Un Peu De Neige Salie' by Bernhard Günter and 'The Golden
Boat' by Keith Berry are excellent (if you're tolerant about
high pitched frequencies/sounds)!

there are always plenty more avant labels for me to
checkout... i've been really into a lot of Touch and
Erstwhile lately...

there´s a track from iss sa which has some "real
audio"-sounding beats on the end...

8-12 bit samples are often great for music production I
think, but clipping, crackles and hiss is best when replaced
by silence.

I thought the brown noise was the frequency that causes
bowel disruption in humans. (seriously) Military
implications and all that.
