Personal tragedy and advice for all

offline danbrusca from Derbyshire (United Kingdom) on 2004-03-19 10:21 [#01110447]

My mum died at 2pm this afternoon as a result of head
injuries sustained following a fall downstairs early this
morning.

The doctors at Queen's Medical Centre told me that she was
badly injured shortly after our arrival at hospital and that
she may only have a few hours left. While sitting by her
bedside, a nurse told me that studies have shown that
patients in such a condition can still hear. Suddenly,
everything I was saying carried enormous weight, it was
clear that this was the last opportunity I would have to say
things that she might hear.

I had the room cleared and said the things I needed to say.
She died minutes afterwards.

So, if I am to impart to you something from this day of
personal tragedy, it would be to never put off the things
you need to say. You never know when fate will take away
that opportunity forever.

It may also seem weird to you that I am here posting this at
this time. Well, I was emailing a few people who know my mum
online and the words came to mind, so it seemed appropriate
to share them.

Very sorry to hear that Dan - you're absolutely right about
saying what you have to say while you have a chance. Life is
far too short and fragile to bottle things up inside. Be
well.

This probably won't mean anything to you as what i'm saying
isn't anything new or original. But I really hope that
you're coping ok with everything. I am glad that you got
that opportunity before she went to tell her exactly what
she meant to you. I'm sure it was the best thing she could
have wished for; to hear that. All of my best wishes to
you.xx

wow dan, im real sorry. i know what its like to feel that
way... death is something of a mortality mirror. we see
ourselves in it, and it makes us prone to personal
revelation and change, therefore sowing seeds of birth.

im sorry you had to have that experience that way, and i
wish you the best.

There is nothing I can say to make things better, but I am
truly sorry to hear this, I can feel your pain and can only
imagine what must be going through your mind. Keep talking
to people, be they friends or family, don't suffer alone.

the reason that I recently lost my job was over an argument
with my dad, he quit smoking because he was going to die if
he continued, when I broke my leg and was away from work, he
started up again, 6 months later after continued promises of
quitting again he still hasn't, and his health is suffering
greatly because of it, if he keeps going now he might die in
a year but if he stopped he could live another thrity,

after he quit he was healthier than ever, and now he simply
won't give up,.. so I told him that it's easier for me to
pretend he doesn't exist than watch him kill himself because
he refuses to listen to me and quit,

I told him that I won't talk to him again till he quits, and
I won't visit him in hospital if he gets sick from it, it's
his own stupid fault, the sad thing is,.. I know that he'll
die before he quits, so I'll probably never speak to my
father again :\

I can appreciate what you are going through Dan, my
grandmother died quite recently. I never got the chance to
see her for a couple of days before she died and I wish I
had, but I don't know if I could have articulated everything
I wanted to say.
The only advice I can give is that the next few days and
weeks will be really hard, but death is a part of life your
mum loved you very much.
