No I'm not talking about them sticking to your ass (or brain if you want to stretch it), though indeed I titled it to get an inept joke.
My apologies if I bring up something mundane and obvious, but I'd just like to bring up one of my favorite things about autechre albums (well ok clearly the favorite issue is the music itself), namely track ordering/relationship.
I assume most people listen like I do, with a monstrous playlist with some miserable randomizing feature. Anyway first thing I noticed is that lots of the autechre I like most is the last track of an album. I've heard lots of people mention teartear, nuane, vletrmx, etc. Of course there's a lot more going on than something as basic as 'last track no suck'.
Probably the clearest progression (for me) is the last few tracks of chiasm (err, chiastic slide). Calbruc (which I'm not too crazy about), recury, pule, and nuane all hang together as an over-arching 'coda' for me. calbruc, recury, and nuane all have a strongly related rhythm/accompaniment/beat, and pule is a nice tune, for me a moment of blissful ignorance before the storm (as nuane is the most violent track on the disc).
Anyway there's too much to say on this and I'm going to stop my moaning there. I'll just mention quickly that I also like how the last three tracks of amber hang together, how the first disc of tri-repetae++ (yes yes that release) subordinates well (particularly closing) with the second disc.. also of note is the tradition of the nastiest track on a disc being last (happens with confield, amber, ep7, tri-rep disc 2 (garbage), chiasm, blah blah blah.
Well, thanks for having this great messageboard, which I've enjoyed intermittently as one of those sullen guest losers conspicuously anonymous on the left. My apologies for posting so much drivel; I've made a huge number of omissions and would definitely like to hear other people's favorites on this topic, as well as all the beatings that I expect.

Really? It's the first four where I see clear progression on Chiastic Slide (Cipater, Rettic AC, Tewe and Cichli).

Also see zeiss contarex->netlon sentinel->pir for another ingenious track order. I don't listen to ae on random though, in fact I don't really listen to single tracks of theirs; it feels too much like reading random chapters of a book. Ae and BoC are the only artists that I have found this with.

[horsefactory] *nod*
That's precisely what I love. I used to always listen to massive lists with repeat; now with autechre I take individual albums and listen to them straight through--it really clarifies their music for me. I also haven't found this with other artists. I own no BoC (I am new to autechre, and quite obsessed).
I definitely know what you mean about reading random chapters in a book, and thank god these guys can perceive the kind of huge architecture (sorry for the bad pun, taking a word from their name) that is required for this. By the way what you said reminds me of a funny post of yours on the issue of topic reading order, wherein you said your brain doesn't go through time backwards and therfore you don't read threads that way.
thanks for pointing out the end of ep7 instance.

true, thanks for that one. Like I said to horsefactory I'm new to autechre so I latched onto something kindof simplistic; namely, as before, the last track of the albums, and from there I made my point. But yeah the first four tracks of chiasm are awesome (I should stop saying that, it's like calling drukqs drugs or use).

oh ha! I hadn't read that between parentheses-line.
but you should let it go - it's worse than calling drukqs drugs because it doesn't even sound like "chiastic slide".

While I'm blathering on... draft7.30, I feel, doesn't get enough concrete commentary (shit, don't take that to mean that I'll say anything decent), and I think it's interesting that for that one they chose to taper in and out of the CD and put a lot of the really aggressive stuff in the middle (I'm a big fan of surripere and theme of a sudden roundabout). Well what I said was approximate not concrete whoops. I think I'll inaugurate my activity on my messageboard properly: LAZY_TITLE

Heh. It's even worse since my motivation for doing it is stupid:
1) too lazy to write 'chiastic slide' (yet somehow motivated to write an article about that point like I am now. Being hypocritical sucks *sigh*)
2) another instance at me being baffled by autechre's 'off-by-one' word tweaks (as opposed to their more cryptic permutations); I mean, chiastic and incunabula are not in modern lexicons--chiasm and incunabulum are.
By the way, basically all of my reading these days is of technical references, so my english is rather braindamaged. lobotomized. whatever.

I see most of the Draft tracks having a definite mid-point, where either a) the earlier veneer is peeled back to reveal an underlying, stripped down melody/structure, b) it meets the breaking point and falls apart, or c) as with theme of a sudden roundabout, a chaos of noise clumps together into a rigid precise rhythm.
1. Xylin room after 3.35; 're-direction' of rhythm and that melody
2. IV VV IV VV VIII; after 2.50; bouncing rhythm of the first half is turned into a repeated rapid assault accompanied by a new struggling melody later on.
3. 6ie.cr; the fucking classic example at 2.52. Beat is stripped away to reveal that fucking awesome rambling melody and shifting 'chord'/harmonies
4. tapr; This one just seems like a spinning buildup, no distinct changes I'd say, but perfect lead to surripere
5. surripere; another good example of course- at 3.55 that slicing beat begins to tear things apart, 6.45 all remaining warthm is gone and the void underneath is opened up underneath the beat, hardly holding together. and then again it becomes more violent at 9.30
6. theme of a sudden roundabout; 2.40 after fiddling around, the beats fit together and continue, even becoming liesurely until a masterful closing wrapping it up.
7. vl al 5; 3.00- starts shuddering in a terribly good way, reminds me of a flickering light or an off-track videotape
8. p. tnil; 4:07- that ironically bouncy melody comes in instilling anxiety in the remnants of the previous mechanical efficiency of the decayed rhythm
9. v-proc; the intro ends at 1.22 getting into the main song which slowly shifts out of place, the timing seeming to get further and further seperate.
10. reniform puls- 2.35 the beat begins a manic drive under the strings and melody, seeming to be held back initially until relentlessly hammering out until disappearing at 6.44 leaving just a few humming remains shadowin the previous rhythm

hmm... i disagree
there is no coherence problem with autechre tracks, sure, but there are albums by other artists which blend together much better (imo) than autechre! it's not that uncommon to have seemless transitions between different tracks... or "clever" transitions!
in Laurent Garnier's 'Unreasonable Behaviour', for example, i just love how The Warning (trk1) leads to City Sphere (trk2)...
about fading seemlessly, 'Puppy' by Fluke is a reference! the tracks are all distinct but they really blend together so well, when listening casually you don't notice most transitions...
another transition i love is the one from Parabol to Parabola in Tool's 'Lateralus', makes me shiver with pleasure almost every time : )
and i could find lots of other examples...
...but i never noticed anything remarkable like that with autechre... = /
(though i must say in ep7, i didn't notice any transition between tracks 4 and 5, it must have been very well-made - well, anyway i didn't notice any difference between these tracks anyway ; ))
...
bah, i guess i'm just not cerebral / intelligent / analyzing enough ' _ -

I like the cohesion in the lyrics of this song, "Life" by Des'ree:
I'm afraid of the dark, especially when I'm in the park. When there's no-one else aroiund, I get the shivers. I don't wanna see a ghost, that's a site I fear the most. I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news.
Life, oh life, oh life. Oh Life, do do do do... Life, of life, oh life. Oh Life, do do do...
I'm a superstitious girl, I'm the worst in the world. Never walk under ladders, I keep the rabbit's tail. I'll take you up on a deer, anytime, anywhere. Pick a place, I don't care, bungee jumping, I don't care.
Chorus
Life do do do do do do do do do do. Oh life, oh life, oh life, oh life.
So, after all said and done, I know I'm not the only one. Life, it really can be fun, if you really want to. Sometimes living out your dreams, ain't as easy as it seems.
You wanna fly around the world, in a beautiful balloon.
Chorus x 2
do do do do do....... Oh life, oh life.....
Yes, it's hard to believe they are real. Please download this song and enjoy your life.
