I've decided to stick-it-to-the-man, as they say, all this
week..

The plan is to rent a stack of DVDs each night and copy
them. I've got my system down pretty good. Even doing hi-res
scans of the covers, discs and inlays..

First up on ye olde chopping block:

Russian Ark
Lost In Translation
Koyaanisquatsi
Winged Migration

Russian Ark is great. If you have a good public library
with DVDs, it's a lot cheaper to do.

is it just me, or does it seem like when you burn dvds, most
of the time the audio is really quiet in comparison to a
commercial dvd? i've heard this has to do with the writable
discs not being able to hold all of the information, like
the multiple layers on the disc that contain the
surround-sound audio information.. it also seems like the
burnt copies are much more prone to visual glitches and
freeze-up..

never had a problem with any of mine..

theres a bit of archiving going on with the a/v, but that's
to be expected when im compressing it so much to fit on a
4.7gb dvdr.

im using dvd shrink 3.0 to rip and ImgTool Burn to burn
them.. Never burned a coaster out of the 15 or so copies
I've done thus far, and never had poor playback quality like
you had mentioned. Doing this on a Sony DRU-501a DVDrw.

as I understand it, you can't burn all the info of a normal
dvd on a writable dvd - they can't hold the same amount of
info, or something.

so there will always be compression and loss of quality.

and don't rip things like "russian ark" - I mean, for this
the same rule applies as for mp3s, I think. if it's small
scale, just buy the real thing.
