ok so the reporters and field recorders at my radio station are going to be recording on minidisc. once the get back to the production studio, what is the best method for editing the audio down?
on my minidisc i just edit on the actual piece of hardware and its never too involved really.
is there a periphial for PC that will load up a minidisc into a software editor?
should the audio just be dumped in raw format through a digital i/o sound card and loaded into cool edit or something similar?
is there a piece of stand alone hardware that would function as a digital editing workstation for a MD?
just looking for your experiences..

I didn't understand a word of the technical piece. I've worked for a radio-station, and I used MD as a recorder. I used a sound-editing program called Dalet where I transfered sound and Edited from the MD.

Connected a MD to the computer and played the interview or whatever, and at the same time I just recorded with the record-function on Dalet. Have you experiences with Dalet?

If the only means of accessing minidisc is via the portable devices you have no option other than either a digital transfer of audio or analogue, both in real time. NetMD only allows data to be transfered to the mindisc device and not from it.

oh jesus, so you have to record onto the pc in real time? no way to just move the data over?
hmm sounds like a pain in the ass. thanks for the info. i think ill look at mixers/audio workstations that support editing on-board.

well, if you have adobe premier, you can capture audio (if the computer you are using is configured to sych. with the md-deck). my communication department (radio station) has the configuration. what i would recommend is using sound forgery's vegas to capture the audio. it's much better at editing audio. surely your station's editing suite has these programs.

use the light pipe on the MD to dump into the computer. edit from there.
you dont have to sit through the entire MD to record, just jump to the spots you want to edit and go from there. it is the cheapest, fastest way to do it.

ok, this makes more sense. I was beginning to think the only way to get the audio onto the pc would be to record it as if it were audio off of a lins source, in real-time.
Thanks for all the input guys.
Portland, I gotta talk to you bud, check your email.

I think that is still what is being said. I assume Portland just meant only copy off the sections of the audio you need to edit rather than the whole thing though.

Sony are meant to be looking at introducing two way USB digital transfer (probably with the release of Hi-MD)...but I agree that it is a bit shit as it stands at the moment.

yeah, you are right about the transfer, HiMD will solve this for some types of recordings (PC only though :/ ) But there is actually a md unit for professional broadcast use who will allow digital transfer to a pc/mac through usb , but it costs a lot...
