jeezus that thing is expensive for what is essentially a
crappy laptop stuck to a midi controller.

"oh no one bit of my all-in-one-thing is broken. oh look,
now I can't use any bit of my all-in-one-thing."

That's the first thing I thought of. Also the resolution on
the screen in shitty and the externally supported resolution
is the same.

Having an AMD processor ain't so hot either...

Nah. the internals will just use existing connections, so if
one part broke the rest would still work, it would just be a
bit shit.

Isn't it some kind of retardation?

this concept may be in it's early stages but they are on the
right track I think, harware & software working seamlessly
together with no compatability problems sounds like a dream
come true.

I'd like a small self contained hardware equivalent of a PC
base unit thing you could mount in a rack flightcase (about
the size of say, a 12" record flightcase) for gigging. It
should have ports to attach a midi controller/keyboard,
mouse and flatscreen monitor that would fit in the same
flightcase "over" the main body of the device- with just the
ports sticking out underneath. Perhaps even some sort of
dual system whereby you can flick between two identical
systems (chained together) in the event of a crash...

I saw that thing a while ago in Keyboard Mag, but kept
forgetting to post it here.. I think it seems pretty fucking
cool..

list price $6450. sells for $5175.95

at Costco you can get a 3.0ghz toshiba laptop for $1399
you can get a radium 61 key midi controler for $200
you'd still have $3577 dollars left over to buy a second
laptop you can dedicate to porn and videogames.

why not make one?

you could easily make your own machine into any config you
want, you could make it a 6U rack mount or something, and
it'd be totally self contained (i mean, you could have 2
computer systems in there, and like you say, in the event of
a crash, you switch over) you could put your own ports and
everything on there

people have made PC's out of NES systems, and toasters

i dont see why not out of a rackmountable system
;)

Or a second laptop, a 2x2 midi breakout box and a good 2
channel mixer, so you can run both laptops, with bass and
drums on one and melody/synths and samples on the other,
synched to the midi box. That way:
a) You'd have more processing power available
and
b) In the event of a crash on one machine, you could still
keep playing on the other one till the other machine came
back up.

Ceri you can buy rack mount PC cases in a variety of sizes
from quite a few places. They tend to be used for servers
and stuff, I have two at work :P

The idea does certainly intrigue me... the main thing would
be getting a rack mountable flatscreen monitor of a decent
size in there. I'd have to look into converting an existing
one with mounting clips or something. Damn, thanks for
giving me the idea, I'll have to look into this as a project
for when I'm working and can afford to sink some cash into
something like this. Might be handy for use as a Traktor
machine for DJing too, come to think of it :)

Also, if it was in a flight case with removable front and
back, I could put some meaty cooling fans in there and blow
the air actually through the box.

I know that, we had them at work- a Dell Poweredge server
isn't quite as portable as I was hoping for ;)

What's wrong with a 1U or 2U case?

you've actually seen a 1U rackmount case that is meant for a
computer? The smallest size I've ever seen was 2U I
think....

The decent (15" plus) rack mountable monitors are 6U
minimum. If I need to get an 8U rack to fit the monitor and
have space underneath for other things, there's no need for
the PC bit to be tiny.

Or you could run virtual machines so that if any virtual
machine dies you can just keep running more virtual machines
times infinity! :P

I think you guys are going someplace...building your own is
precicely what is needed. First off, you cant put any
homemade/designed devices inbetween any of the connections.
It is way too self contained. I couldent stand working with
that crappy mouse poodle either. The only real advantage is
that you dont need too much electronic/midi knowledge(which
isnt an advantage) and basic portability, but anyone willing
enough could make their own. stick a laptop compartment and
all your midi controllers, one basic midi controller, and at
the same time, add anything else in anypart you want of the
whole thing.

and of coarse itll look alot better for a live show.

But the CPU load on the physical machine would be through
the roof- more than halving performance and the latency
would be abysmal :)

the best part about laptops is the portability. you can't
take some gigantic all-in-one with you to the coffee shop to
work on your shit.

or set up this monster on your lap on a trans-continental
flight on your world tour.
