Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

MTV.com has a short article on San Andreas but there really
isn't anything of note in the article, except for a short
listing of gangs that may end up in the game.

"This time around, users will encounter rival gangs like the
Chinatown Triads, Mexican mobs, hippies, Hare Krishnas and
many more."

I'm not sure how accurate this information is, but I have to
admit it's been awhile since GTA had Hare Krishnas to run
down.

Gamespot posted their rundown on some possible plot ideas
for GTA:SA based on the casting call for voice actors.
Characters mentioned in Rockstar's ad include:

Maccer - "A Manchester-born white male, 22." Possibly based
on Danny Dyer's character (Moff) in Human Traffic ( Dany
Dyer played Kent Paul in VC).
Mad Dogg - "Black American Male, 23."
Maria - "Young Italian female."
Gamespot goes on to indicate that the game may take place in
the 1990s based on the films used for reading material.

The full article is on game spot

i used to like how the hare krishnas all walked in a line,
and if you drove at the right angle, you could run them all
over in one pass. infact, wasn't that a "kill frenzy" mini
game?

if this is indeed GTA:4 then they haven't rushed shit. they
rushed VC to capitalize on GTA:3 and to stall for the
devolopment of GTA:4.

i remeber reading in uh... electronic gaming monthly when
vice city had just come out that vice city was not gta4 they
have been working on gta4 since they finished gta3 and that
they didn't expect gta3 to become as big as it had so they
decided to rush vc to gamers to hold them over untill gta4
was finished because they wanted to totally redo the whole
thing and push the boundries of gaming again just like gta3
had but it would take forever because new technology was
coming out that made more ideas possible boom.

Rockstar spills the beans.

''So. Now we know. San Andreas is NOT Los Angeles, it's a
whole state. Los Santos, on the other hand is, to all
intents and purposes, LA. The game's two other cities, San
Fierro and Las Venturra are based on San Francisco and Las
Vegas respectively. There'll be countryside between the
three main areas, each of which is roughly the same size as
the whole of Vice City. Big, in other words. Overall, the
game will be an incredible four to six times the size of its
predecessor.

Main character Carl Johnson is going to have his work cut
out. Returning to his old haunts after five years in the
Liberty City slammer, and blamed by his older brother Sweet
for younger bro' Brian's accidental death, he'll be making
his way through an early 90's streetscape besieged by rival
gangs.

The most significant gameplay changes are a new stamina
meter, meaning you need to eat, and massively improved
building interiors. You'll be able to commit burglary now,
or run a casino in Las Venturra. If you're feeling less
ambitious you can just gamble away your ill-gotten gains on
the tables in LV.

Brilliantly, improved AI means you can recruit a gang, the
Orange Grove Families, and drag members along on missions.
Up to four people can complete a drive-by mission, for
instance.''

Rock.

E3 opened today and Rockstar kicked off by unleashing three
GTA: San Andreas screenshots giving us our first glimpse of
the next GTA along with a short synopsis of the plot. As
you can see from the shots (and as Gamespot noted) it looks
like it might be based in the late 80's / early 90's. I'm
guessing they'll shoot for the 90's to capitalize on even
more of Sony's music collection.

"Five years ago Carl Johnson (shown in the middle
screenshot) escaped from the pressures of life in Los
Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang
trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and
millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and
gangbangers.

Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother
has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his
childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops
frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes
him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his
family and to take control of the streets."

First off, San Andreas will be an entire state, not just a
single city. Within San Andreas there will be three cities,
Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco), and
Las Venturra (Las Vegas).

San Andreas will be larger than any previous GTA game by
far, clocking in at four to six times larger then any of the
previous games in the series.
Moving from one city to another will be seamless as you'll
actually travel through the countryside to reach each of
your destinations.
The game engine will allow for much more varied and detailed
environments than any of the previous GTA titles. Graphics
updates include real time reflections on cars, windows,
mirrors, etc., radial lighting, soft shadowed lighting for
indoor environments, and separate models for day and night
for added detail.
GTA: SA will feature interior locations for the "vast
majority of the buildings." These locations will also serve
as more than just a save location opening the way for "new
types of gameplay" like robbery.
Purchasing property and GTA: SA will be more fleshed out,
allowing you not only to buy but also to build (probably
scripted and not free form but cool nonetheless). At one
point you'll even have the opportunity to build and run a
fully operational casino.
GTA: SA is based in the early 90's, opening the game up for
some intense gang warfare.
As usual Rockstar will be going all out on the voice acting.
No confirmations thus far, but it has been rumored that Dave
Chappelle may make an appearance.
Radio stations will still be in place and you can bet that
Rockstar will use an even larger catalog of music. With
three different cities to choose from we'll probably see
different sets of radio stations in different cities further
expanding the play list.

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2004-05-16 12:46 [#01190788]
Points: 27325 Status: Lurker

GTA: SA will be the first GTA to feature the need for food.
Depending on how you eat and what you do you'll see your
character get fatter or thinner which then ties into your
stamina meter and actually effects other ped's reaction to
you (FAT BASTARD!). Getting fatter will have its
consequences and will make some missions more difficult.
This actually cuts both ways because you can also go to the
gym and improve your physical condition, increasing your
strength, speed, and changing your character model.
Targeting and control in third person games has always been
an issue, but Rockstar has some interesting solutions that
have yet to be revealed. Dan Houser's advice is to play the
shooting levels in Manhunt to get any idea of what they have
in mind.
Character control will be more varied, allowing for
swimming, multiple combat stances, and attack styles.
GTA: SA will feature a "s---load of weapons" all of which
will reflect the real world weaponry of the early 90'. All
the weapons in the game will have their own unique feel and
you'll also be able to double up on the pistols using one in
each hand.
Animation will also be refined with rag doll physics and
location based hit detection.
The vehicle physics engine has been further tweaked but
nothing specific was mentioned.
New forms of transportation will be introduced in San
Andreas, but the only one mentioned was the bicycle.
Apparently you'll be able to speed up by mashing buttons.
Ahh the days of Track and Field :) ...

IGN-

May 19, 2004 - Game Informer Magazine's issue 134, dubbed
the "San Andreas Issue" is just that, a tribute to
Rockstar's multi-million selling franchise. In it, Game
Informer lays out the groundwork for what will ultimately
become this year's biggest selling and most anticipated
PlayStation 2 game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The article is some ten pages deep and details many
previously unknown aspects of the title and perhaps even
some previously unimagined ones. San Andreas, which we
surmise is technically the seventh in the series of Grand
Theft games, is fundamentally very much like GTA III and
Vice City, only with a hell of a lot more tacked onto the
base drive / shoot game.

This early 1990s fictional interpretation of a combination
of California and Nevada isn't just a greater Los Angeles
called San Andreas (New York or Chicago's Liberty City of
the west). As Game Informer goes on to elaborate, it is
instead an amalgamation of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las
Vegas, and all of the countryside that would lie between
them. Each of the three areas corresponding to the three
real-life cities upon which Rockstar drew inspiration is
said to be as large as all of Vice City. Put them together
and add in the in-between roads and you have a map that's
substantially more than thrice the size of the last GTA.
This is our backdrop for the latest crime spree. Replete
with gangs, underlings, bosses, bystanders, and the promise
of eventual cameos by GTA memorables, the adventure through
San Andreas promises to be an extremely large one.

A new streaming technology will ensure the changes in
scenery are immediate, but will also allow for more detailed
environments than before. This technological expansion also
apparently goes on to include subtleties like real-time
reflections, softer shadowing, ragdoll physics applied to
fallen adversaries, and independent models dedicated to day
and night cycles. All of this visual splendor is only in
place to help develop the actual game, of course.

As the Game Informer article continues, we learn that
purchasing structures will play a more pivotal role in the
title. This time around it will be possible to even own and
operate a casino bought by money earned from completed
missions and even that stolen from households and businesses
in the after hours. Naturally, Rockstar also promises AI and
control advancements that come hand-in-hand with the
announcement of every sequel, making it possible to hire
three companion thugs to join in the unlawful festivities
and shoot in way compared to Manhunt.

When not criminal-ing, players will have to maintain their
characters by consuming food. Eat too many donuts and you
turn fat and lose stamina, speed, and respect. Go to the gym
regularly and your boy will be a right and proper killing
machine. Even his appearance will change, depending. So, if
you want to swim with some skill (you sure can now), then
you'll have to lay off the twice fried Twinkies.

Expect our fat, donut munching, bicycle riding, pistol
wielding, ocean swimming, poker playing asses to come back
with a hands-on as soon as it is made available. Until then,
please check out Game Informer issue 134 for the full,
unadulterated San Andreas scoop. And, be sure to also add
San Andreas to your watched list, so that the latest updates
can hit your inbox with haste.

===============================

I can't wait. It sounds too good to be true, though. Surely,
it shan't be true?

You may or may not be able to build and/or run a casino.
Gamespy is reporting that Rockstar has yet to confirm or
deny this feature regardless of what is being reported
elsewhere. Casino's will be in there, but the player
involvement with them is still any ones' guess.
Rockstar is still being quoted as saying GTA:SA will be
four, five, or even six times bigger then any of the
previous games in the GTA series. They also repeat the
report that there will be some sort of mountain in the game
and it takes a one minute game time helicopter ride to get
to the top. They also mention that you may be able to ride
your bike all the way down.
Gamespy confirms that GTA:SA will definitely be set in the
early 90's
Graphical improvements include, impact animation, rag doll
physics, independent day and night models for extra detail
and more realistic lighting, Manhunt style gameplay with
different approaches to different missions (stealth, run and
gun, etc), and new Manhunt style targeting system with
better indication as to how much damage any given target can
take (it's beginning to sound like Manhunt was a proving
ground to test out some of R*'s ideas for GTA :) ). GTA:SA
might also include real time reflections on cars and other
surfaces, realistic shadowing using radial lighting, and six
times the draw distance of any of the previous games in the
series.
No load times for outdoor settings, but moving indoors will
incur a modest load time.
New vehicles include bicycles (you're rumored to start the
game with a bike) and other off-road vehicles like a
quad-runner. It's also rumored that cops will have the
added ability to grab on to your car and we might also see
some CHiPs style motorcycle cops joining in on the chase.
GTA:SA will feature a new and improved driving system that
is rumored to net us more control and realism. Rockstar is
all about balancing fun and realism so this should be an
improvement rather than a hindrance.

Swimming will finally make an appearance in GTA allowing you
to swim away from any vehicular mishaps. This should be a
welcome addition as long as they don't go nuts with the
swimming missions.
Gang warfare will make up about 15% of GTA:SA's gameplay.
As mentioned previously you will be able to perform
robberies (house robberies and otherwise) but with serious
consequences.
GTA:SA will be adding to VC's ability to change outfits by
adding the ability to change hairstyles as well. If you end
up with a bad haircut then you can expect to hear some trash
talk from the peds. This goes along with the fact that peds
will react to your appearance with appropriate insults or
compliments. Just like changing clothes in VC, changing
hairstyles in SA will help you lower or eliminate your
wanted level.
Once again, you can get fat or fit in GTA:SA, which will
directly effect your endurance in the game.
The peds in GTA:SA are supposed to be smarter this time
around. I know, we've heard this exact same line before,
hopefully it's for real this time.
Music will obviously be a big part of GTA:SA and you can bet
that Rockstar's preference for Sony's PS2 will net them
access to Sony's music licenses.
