12.1? there exist one 12.1 surround-thingie. it sucks
bigtime! nothing is made for 12.1 yet, so all the speakers
(except for 6) are matrix-mapped.

So does Vsnares own a system like that? and does he expect
everyone else to have one to get the full experience?

cant be arsed linking, but some peeps on mu were talking
about it, and that is the new album ziq088, which will be
released in regular stereo, but which aaron has made some
12.1 versions at a san francisco studio to be able to get it
exactly right.

well, you can register....

OR, I'll paste it here:

It's actually 12.6,,,6 around the ceiling, 6 halfway between
the ceiling and the floor, then 6 subs on the floor. So you
are completely surrounded and sound can be placed virtually
anywhere in the field. Say you have something start in the
very top left then crash behind you to your right and
explode into everything like standing inside a mushroom
cloud. You get the picture. Was done at Naut Humon's
Recombinant Media Labs studio in SF. Richard Devine, Otto
Von Schirach and a bunch of others have also done music on
the system. We all did a show around this time last year at
the Paradiso in Amsterdam performing some of this 12.6
surround madness. A stereo version of my huge chrome
cylinder box unfolding will be out on planet mu in a few
months. I have to add, the only place you can truly hear the
12.6 version is in that studio, which Naut tells me is up to
16.8 now! Can't wait to be back there...

that kind of stupid to me.. i mean.. humans only have two
ears.. i'm not saying that there's no difference in sound or
your perception of it, if the audio is coming from behind
you to the left, or in front of you to the left, but just 5
speakers seems like plenty to indicate this.. if you were to
have 12+ speakers it seems like it would just all mish-mash
together anyway and moreover take over the sound properties
of the room.. and basically end up a stereo "mix" in your
head anyway..
this is all just my opinion, but when i listen to music, i
picture the performers on the stage in front of me, and the
sound travelling from their location to me.. i don't at all
imagine myself sitting in the dead centre of a room with
everything aimed directly at me.. but, i guess with certain
experimental music they are willing to try new things and
break the "rules".
. i guess i just believe that any music should be able to
enjoyed pumped directly into each ear, with nothing else..
and i don't want to need a special room to listen to it..
i guess the same can be said for film.. the sounds can
circle around me in a 3d fashion, and there can be
explosions that rumble and quake the floor around me, but
that will never take the thought out of my mind that i am
just watching a movie.. to me it never makes the movie any
more emotional, or relatable, it usually just indicates that
the movie makers spent more on and focussed more on the
technical aspects of making it, instead of trivial things
like plot and characters, etc..

The sound from a subwoofer isn't really directional, which
is why you only need one in most cases. I think 12 channels
of audio is a bit excessive. I don't see the point, really.
