i like old hip hop

at least i think it's old...i don't really get new stuff
(except for doseone and one or two more...)

today i listened to some samples of KMD and i loved them, so
now im downloading (i ordered the album already, but cant
wait that long) tunes and i love them...they totally remind
me of de la soul (maybe a little less pop, im no
expert...).

so i was wondering are there any other bands/artists doing
this UPLIFTING kind of hip hop?

thanks

Tribe Called Quest
Pete Rock and CL Smooth
Nas ("illmatic"-era nas)
Jungle Brothers
Brand Nubian
Gang Starr
Digable Planets
the Pharcyde
and then some of the new stuff that is wicked in that way:
anything by Madlib (this includes Quasimoto, the Lootpack,
the Beat Conductor, Jaylib, his Shades of Blue album, etc.)
Diverse
Common
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Cyne
McEnroe
etc.

well, they're kind of old now... i can't say that i've
listened to their stuff too much though, so i can't really
defend it

yes, definitely... and a lot of the old gangsta shit is
pretty decent: NWA, the first DR. Dre album, Ice Cube's
early stuff, public enemy, etc.

notorius big and all this other stuff is ok, but nothing
close to KMD and de la soul :)

im loving it...i usually listen to melancholic, depressing
(in a good way :) ) music so this is a great change.

yeah, i have couple of their albums...but i don't like them
quite as much as kmd, tho they're gerat as well. but the
thing is there's usually couple of great songs on their
albums and the rest of it isn't all that great...

i prefer tribe to De La, but i don't feel like i've given De
La enough of my time to really compare the two...

no way man... RZA is an awesome producer... there are so
many solo efforts that are awesome... stuff by Ghostface
Killah, Raekwon, Method Man, GZA... not to mention that
despite the fact that none of their albums are great all the
way through, there are plenty of awesome tracks on both
Wu-Tang Forever, and Iron Flag... wu is wicked cause they
such wordy gangstas.... "socrates philosophies and
hypothesies can define how i be droppin' these mockeries,
lyrically performed armed robbery, flee with the lottery,
possibly they spotted me..."

becoming a conglomerate......
and i only like the first wu-tang album.....

but i respect rza big time....and im not saying all the
new stuff is shit...i love the ghost dog ost.

it's definitely sketchy, at times... those boys have made a
lot of disappointing decisions over the years... but they
still know how to get it done, when they're in the mood...
