oh yeah, no doubt about it - the ads are crap

but what it's talking about is total bullshit........yeah
right, shutting down your mac.........it just goes poof,
it's gone

in all my years of using Mac's that's NEVER happened to me,
and I run Mac's to the extreme (as in multiple apps open,
burning cd's AT THE SAME TIME AS SURFING THE NET, LISTENING
TO MUSIC etc etc) and i've never had a problem.

i've never come across a Windows PC that can burn a disc in
the background whilst you're doing something else

Yeah, some op that stuff was definately bullshit.. but my
guess is if the part about it crashing is founded at all in
some form of truth, it's probably whatever application he
was using's fault, and not the actual computer or O/S.

well no, because Mac OS X is UNIX - an application doesn't
have direct acess to the kernel and it's memory, so an
application can't halt the system (at least, that's what
i've read/been told/seen/experienced myself)........the same
can be acheived on PC's running Linux or some other *NIX
based system

i reckon that vid was made by bill gates

heh

Oh yeah? Well the rightmost gray checkers in your avatar are

I just thought it was funny. I haven't even used a mac very
much aside from typing classes in high school.

Well, in my experience, my computer doesnt just lock up if
it's not doing anything, like idling at the desktop. it
would have to be from an illegal operation within a program
or something to that effect that would make my computer
crash... and that is the only reason my comp has ever
crashed... So this would be an all software issue. Of course
I'm a PC user so maybe it's different with macs.

yes it is different with Macs (well, it is with Mac OS X)
because the kernel is acessable by other programs, and the
memory is acessable too.....a program running in Windows can
directly affect the kernel, which can (and most of the time
does) halt the system

But any UNIX based operating system does not succumb to
this, because the kernel is segregated from the rest of the
system

damn, i worded that wrong, what i meant was that it's
different with mac's because with windows the kernel
is acessable........blah blah blah

Windows NT, 2000 and XP do have kernel and application
memory protection. It's not as effective as the Unix design
for various reasons.

For instance the Windows GUI code resides in kernel space.
That sacrifices speed for stability and security.

offline Inverted Whale from United States Minor Outlying Islands on 2004-02-26 11:24 [#01090388]

er, that should read

sacrifices stability and security for speed

Doesn't make much sense otherwise.

yeah i know that the NT based systems are more stable, and i
do admit that those systems seem to be the more stable of
all the micro$haft ones, but i still have problems with
Windows all the time

the PC architecture on the other hand is a good system - if
you have the right OS on it....that's the problem....PC's
have SOOOOOOOO many configurations, this sound card,
that CPU, this that the other......it's not
standardised, and because of that Windows (and other
operating systems for PC) have to support a VERY WIDE RANGE
of hardware, and obviously somethings gonna go wrong,
whereas Apple build machines to spec....they test their
software on them religiously to make sure it's gonna work

if Microsft took the same road as Apple, and distributed
hardware/software configurations that were tested to work,
and work well, they'd be VERY stable

but alas, they chose X-Box

they'll learn

"if Microsft took the same road as Apple, and distributed
hardware/software configurations that were tested to work,
and work well, they'd be VERY stable"

I'd disagree. I think there are still some pretty serious
design issues in Windows itself. Would it be more stable?
Yes - but probably not very stable.

I'd still prefer having a large selection of commodity
components to choose from. Generally you get what you pay
for but at least you are not subject to sometimes outrageous
Apple tax.

There's no free lunch.

I was quite happy with my Atari ST, I'd still go back to
using it if I could get the damn floppy reader working (and
if i could browse xlt!) . So far XP is the most stable os
i have encountered, but I do not like how much disk space
and memory it uses up.

well, ok maybe you're right about Windows not beaing THAT
stable, lol :)

but i disagree with the "Apple Tax" as you put it (if you
are indeed referring to price of hardware)

You can pick up a G4 iBook, of decent specification for
£850.

£850

that's a bargain......the price of Apple hardware has fallen
SO much since the release of the iMac in 1998 (i think it
was 98, might hae been 97, but i'm sure it was 98) anyways i
digress.

Macintosh computers have come down in price a lot, and they
keep coming down.

yeah, most of the aversion towards macs is totally
illfounded... they are good computers and I have no problem
using them even though I've always been a PC guy and still
prefer the way windows does things :)

I think the real reason more people here don't own macs is
simple:

NO EASY ACCESS TO PIRATED SOFTWARE!

Seriously, if you were going to buy legal copies of all
music software you used, you'd almost certainly go for a
Mac. If however, it's a toss up between £1000 PC & free
software or a £1200 mac and £1200 of legit software, most
people will go for the former. Higher latency, not having
supercollider and the hassle of cracks are all irritations,
but for most of us, not worth the additional cost of "going
mac".

Don't get me wrong, I've got a G3 powerbook, I just very
rarely use it.

if I was going to pay for software (which I will at some

Mac... but I can't afford one of them right now either so I
guess I'm stuck with my PC

1) you either mustn't be doing something right, or you're
running OS 9 or earlier

2) right mouse buttons are not necessary, and did you know
that if you plug a multiple button USB mouse in, you get a
contextual menu!!! just like when you ctrl+click

Compared to PCs it's a lot harder to get a full suite of

If I manage/bother to get a CD drive for my G3, I may well
