Is it natural for me to dislike mainstream music?

I was sitting in our college's café which was full of
people and i managed to get a four seater table to myself
(top result). I was quite happily listening to Sigur Rós'
Untitled 1( first track from the () album) and then the
college radio came on and boomed out Jennifer Lopez (or J-Lo
as her friends from 'tha block' call her) "Waiting for
tonight"

It was horrible. Is it natural for me to dislike stuff like
this intensely, or am i just bitter and a music snob?

Here is a picture of a poll suggested by my friend Carl, the
college thought it was a good idea:

It's perfectly natural for someone to express their opinions
about music. Not everyone can like mainstream music and
possibly a few people who claim to don't. I too hate J. Lo.

I actually find her repulsive. I just don't get what people
see in her.

Taste in music evolves much further for some people. You
are an advanced geeza. And was that SeeCafe you were sat in?
Damn I hate the music they play in there.

the rest.

I think repulsive is a bit strong... I'm sure you've seen
some really repulsive women in your time. If not, go to some
areas in Bristol.

She doesn't attract me tho.

I wholeheartedly agree. She seems like a megalomaniac,
self-adulating, gucci fur coat wearing, fat arsed
latino-cleaner bint. And those kind of women I find
repulsive too.

She is a shallow cow!

;-)

so a photo of her actually repells you from the page rather
than just saying "what a cow"??

This word is thrown around more than the word 'Love'!!!

I have the same problem, I really hope people don't think
that I am being all snobby and stuff because it's not like
that. If there was a song I liked and it was mainstream it
wouldn't bother me, but as it stands I do not enjoy any
music that becomes mainstream, except for a few exceptions
of course.

i'd do her!
on a more serious note:
after a load of experimental idm kinda shit, i can really
enjoy mainstream; its like connecting my brain to the rest
of the earth again, and experimentalism/electronica CAN get
boring.

Her shitty attitude is what gets my back up more than
anything else, but I don't find her physically attractive
either.

I remember feeling largely indifferent to her till I saw her
in an interview intersected with clips of the set of a video
she was doing where she was arguing with the director, quite
passionately. Not over some moral principle of what he
wanted her to do in the video or anything like that, but
regarding where the cameras should be! That someone as
vaccuous as that thinks they know more about filmmaking than
a hired director makes me seeth.

and also justin timberlake is somehow making songs i really
enjoy.

watching the evolution of these 4 in particular, has been
very entertaining.

perfectly natural.

everyone has their own opinions and tastes, yours just
happens NOT to be anything mainstream. it's the same with
me, almost.

one thing is mainstream but good and another is mainstream
and bad

bad mainstream is not worse than bad underground anyway

I dont like what I clasify as bad music

i sometimes think i'm too elitist.....but most of the time i
just think that anyone who listens to this crap and thinks
it's good must have something wrong with them.

charts

especially here in England (well in my opinion anyways)
anything that is in the charts is garunteed to be shit

if you dislike it simply because it's popular, then you are
a snob (sorry, but its true)..

if you dislike it because its not good music (which is
usually the case) or not to your taste.. then be my
guest+hate away!

on the other hand, just think how boring it would be if
everybody listened to the same kind of music (ie. the same
music as you)..?

I don't like it because it is mainstream. I don't like it
because it is pants. Although mainstream has a habit of
pulling out the stops and producing something quite
impressive.

I'm quite the fan on the new Britney song (Toxic), and i
totally agree that it would be boring.

well, my experience is that usually anything mainstream is
shit music........look at the charts - britney, jennifer
lopez (sorry, but that's her name, not J-Lo, i refuse to
call her that!) and other miscellaneous pap

don't foget that the charts are either 1)fixed by record
labels, or 2)chosen by 12 year olds' choices of music, and
i'm sorry but I don't know many 12 year olds who are into
decent music......most of them are into shit like above
mentioned pap queens and kings (justin timbershit) and they
mostly listen to stuff like that because everyone else is
and it's deemed "cool"

dont get me wrong. im not defending shit music.
all im saying is : it ain't the fact that it chart's highly
that makes it shit.. its the fact that it's shit music.
on occasion, decent records sell a lot of copies. this
doesnt immediately make them shit. if theyre good songs,
theyre still good.. no matter how many units are sold.

youre right about the charts being heavily weighted in
certain "artists" favour though. good news on that
subject though. when non-specialist stores stock singles,
they only stock whats already in the top 40 + what's most
aggressively marketed. this creates a self-perpetuating
loop, leaving it virtually impossible for non-top 40 artists
to break into the chart. the sooner supermarkets and
highstreet stores stop stocking singles + force record
buyers to buy from dedicated music shops, the (marginally)
greater chance there is of them being able to discover the
hundreds of singles released every week that dont make it
into the charts + arent given heavy rotation on
national/commecial radio.

oh, and there are plenty of electronica fans who are equally
as guilty as the people that buy "mainstream" records of
listening to certain records because it's the "cool" thing
to do.
only in their case, its cool NOT to listen to "popular
music"..

..im not accusing you of this by the way.

lol, yeah i know exactly what you mean

you're totally right about the self-perpetuation effect that
is happening

i don't listen to music because i think it's cool, i listen
to certain music for 2 main reasons:

1) that i actually, genuinely honestly truthfully like it

2) that i can tell there has been a LOT of skill, technique,
complexity involved. both musically and technically.

i never listen to music because someone deems it "cool" or
the "in" thing to be listening to.

i know you weren't accusing me, no offense taken or
anything

i totally understood what you meant :)
