reminds me of space harrier, but that was a dude with a jet
pack not a ship. I bet there's some site somewhere dedicated
to the "snes shooting genre" or something with pictures of
all the shooting games or something.

Reflex said top-back. Phalanx is a side-scroller...

I don't think it's Starfox. I think the polygons are a
standout feature that would be remembered easily...

Ahem, sorry...

Yeah, that's a good little old-style Konami shoot-em-up, but
a tad short. At least it maintains game speed, unlike
Gradius "Slo-mo" III...

The first level in Axelay had one of the baddest ass tracks
in Super NES history. Not a bad game, either, some nice Mode
7 and purdy colors.

I was playing street fighter, and like usual when playing
against blanka responded in the nick of time with a punch
before he hit me with his rolling ball. That's when I
developed a sort of theory that I might use as a heuristic
basis if I ever get to make games of my own. This is that
fun games I can currently think of have two components: 1)
fast stimulus/response in time (the best example I can think
of is punch out where enemies clue you into their next move
with a preceeding wink or something that you must react to
fast enough)
2) choosing the right route among many possible routes to
reach the desired outcome.

Games seem to suck when they merely present the player with
routes, all of which are equally iffy. For example the mazes
in crystalis were irritating because you knew at the core of
the gameplay was a tedious search algorithm to find the
right route. The whole "various route" idea is based on
chaos, where in theory any system/game has a limited number
of possible states (paths to the outcome). But the greater
number of constituent elements, the greater number of
exponential combinations they can make to form new states.
Thus in doom2, even the simple 2-d floor you walk on
presents you with an essentially analogue number of possible
routes to take to the goal, but combine that with all
different possible monster positions and the game is
essentially analogue and so chaotic no two games will be the
same.

nintendo should release a game whose concept is to make
games... that would be fun!

materialized in the past.

I suppose to artificially simulate problem solving and
fighting enemies and other things that our brains evolved
for since otherwise I'd just sit indoors and stare at
unwallpapered walls.
Human memory has a major effect on games (and music- at
least I think complex music is often better when you have a
sort of memory of what happens) For example the gamy "myst"
is totally destroyed as a game after you've beaten it
already because your memory of what to do removes all
challenge. However in games like smash tv, the complex
nature of the interacting elements constantly creates new
challenges second by second which are practically never the
same twice.

The best I've found for this, at least for people like me
with lacking necessary of code and computers, is wadauthor
for doom2 to make your own levels. I always love included
options that allow the players creative altering and
constructing (excite bike and micromachines had level
editors- the micro machines one was cool because you could
redraw all the cars and obstacles and stuff to make it, say
insects instead or something)

There's an RPG maker for Playstation 2, but I haven't heard
good things about it. Maybe someday they'll hit the bullseye
with a really intuitive game like that.

I used to make my own RPGS on paper. Design all the
characters, the weapons, draw the maps, the enemies, plot
some stats... good times. One of my RPGs was over 7000 hours
long. No lie.

My question was of a practical nature... I meant that it is
better to experience games than to create them because the
process of making a game is exhaustingly complex. By the way
I think that games have evolved during the years 97-01 along
with the 3d accelaration revolution... I believe that the
level of immersion of the player in a digital world is far
more advanced than the old snes games... things are far more
random and chaotic... much more resembling the "real" world.
I think that this evolution has stopped for the last 4
years.

Oh lord, I used to make games with paper. Basically
unfinished ones that nobody played. I made a map of a made
up land and then gridded it off on like, 60 sheets of paper
which didn't result in anything. I've made adventure flip
books where ex. "if you want to go in the hole turn to page
2, if you want to climb the tree turn to page 3" etc.
Mostly it was time to waste after my parents made me stop
playing videogames.

Yeah, that might be true. It might also be true that knowing
the secrets behind videogames will take away their magic
feeling. But then just having the ability to make anything
you want would be awesome. I'm sure that using code to
create games- not necessarily games, but anything you can
imagine to create- is a game unto itself, perhaps the
ultimate game.

I need to play more current generation games before I decide
if the major trend toward 3d is generally more fun. I don't
really like a lot of the 3d stuff I've played.

I hope not, but then computers are known for their
incomprehensibility (especially modern ones) as well as
relentless simpleton logic and not doing what you want them
