What prompted IDM artists...

...to incorporate drill-n-bass into IDM? When you really
think about it, the IDM of yesterday and the IDM of today is
totally different-- it used to be ambient techno, now it's
frantic drum and bass. Total turnaround. Not to say that new
IDM is bad.. I just don't understand what prompted such a
radical change in style.

i hate the term "drill'n'bass" almost as much as "idm".. but
thats beside the point. theres aleady a million threads
about that already.

as for this subject.. its all about evolution/progression,
isnt it? the pioneers aren't likely to still be making
records that sounded like their efforts of 10 years ago. it
was their desire to try new sounds that made them stand out
in the first place.
they'll veer off in new tangents in time. maybe revist +
rework older sounds/ideas (yosepH)..
bear in mind, i am just talking about the pioneers here. the
créme de la créme.. not the other flotsam that adopts
other peoples sounds + retread the same ground time+time
again.. (argue amongst yourselves as to who this applies to)

New and Old?

Bugger that. It's all good for different reasons.

I like music. That's all there is to it.

Can't be bothered with genres now. Just artists.

giginger is right.

Plus, just to add confusion, i thought Squarepusher started
the ultimate mash up of breaks then Aphex produced 'HAB'

lately i have been listening to alot of new(ish) sound that
is really ambient. there is only a small amount of artists
doing drilly things? or maybe i'm just so picky... and like
someone already noticed there is always luke vibert

I've never heard luke vibert..

but I have a varied enough selection of electronic that I
can listen to whatever I'm in the mood for.. be it drilly or
ambient. That's all I really need if you ask me, it doesn't
bother me that electronic changes over the years.. I know it
will always be good. ;)

I've listened to some tracks from Yoseph, and I have a for
more that are lined up to play.. so far I like Vibert's
sounds a lot but his melodies aren't the greatest I've ever
heard.:D

there's plenty of everything these days... drill, ambient,
midtempo, downtempo... whatever you want to hear... all you
have to do is find it

It's different for different artists. Technically, IDM
shouldn't be a genre. Since what people normally consider
IDM is mainly just a ton of different styles and influences
lumped together....in a more listening enviroment.

Not all "IDM" artists use drum 'n' bass influences in their
music. A lot of the more popular and known ones do, but
like I said it's different on an artist to artist basis.
There's still lots of music out there that can be dumped
into the old sounding Ambient Techno.
