hard to get into IDM

well i think it should be "IDM", but then people would
think i'm claiming some other music sounds like IDM. stupid
terms aside...

...i think Plaid is one of the more hard groups to get into.
often they don't sound as mechanical as what i'm normally
listening to and it seems they actually prefer composition
over sound abuse. i hated Double Figure when i first picked
it up, but after having listened to it hours on end, i
started to enjoy it. but i'm still afraid to pick up some of
their other albums because i think i won't like them.

what is/was a hard group for you to get into?

I don't get all this "hard to get into" stuff you are gibber
gabbering about. If it is hard to get into it is probably
because you just don't like it. If you don't like it, don't
listen to it...simple init.

I just solved your problem.

just agree 50%

its normal that if you have never listened to electronica it
will be a little hard at the begining to get into it

same can happen with certain artists for us

but the way a lot of people type about it, it is like they
have to force themselves into a state of liking a release.
It doesn't make sense to me. I have never ound any music
hard to get into.

lot of heathens could listen to them without complaining
about THE NOISE ITS JUST NOISE

i agree there are things that have grown on me

most recently (and not necessarily IDM) for me was The
Postal Service. initially, i couldn't stand the guy's
voice. but after i became accustomed to it, i began to
appreciate their music much more. now i actually like the
dude's voice.

Why be afraid? I just listen and if I like I like. It is
very rare that I listen to something that I don't like
though.

it makes me interested in it...

well, i'll often listen to things i know i won't like, just
to try to figure out why other people like it. it
definitely requires some discipline, to try to remain
objective, even though i know i probably won't like it. it
is rare though when something i absolutely don't like
becomes something i can later appreciate.

with The Postal Service, i liked the music from the
begining. it was just a matter of gaining tolerance for the
dude's voice.

i don't think people force themselves to like music. they
may like parts of the music but dislike others. people tend
to focus on the negative side, so the things one dislikes
outweighs the things they like. as for how it grows on you
overtime it may be because it becomes familiar or because
the good parts in the music outweigh the bad or it all gets
washed up together and turns out to be alright. nobody is
forcing themselves to like something they don't.

How do you know you won't like it before you even listen to
it.

I just lets the sounds go into my brain. I like all
different types of music and would hate to have to try to
get into other things because other people like them.

naw, i think that there are a lot of people who just attach
themselves to a band, or style of music purely for the
perpetuation of some image they are trying to project of
themselves.

Like wearing really obscure band t-shirts just so that,
maybe just once, one fateful day, somebody will give them
that knowing, nod of approval.

autechre + vsnares. I actually did force myself to listen
to Confield and Songs about my Cats. Turns out, Vsnares was
easier to 'understand' and now I hardly ever listen to Mr
Funks stuff. I dont care for it. Its almost torture. As is
Autechre too. I can only stand a few of their songs. Too
much 'sound abuse'. I like my music lush and chill. Just
because its interesting or different doesn't make it good to
me.

Why am I missing out on a lot? I listen to music pretty
much all day every day...all different styles and I have
never got bored. there will always be new music to listen
to, and I don't have to go on other peoples recommendations
to find it, other than when laguage is a barrier.

I don't really let anything grow on me for too long. I give
everything a fair chance and even try to ''force'' myself
into liking what turns out to be true shit, but overall, I
know what I like right off the bat. If I was to make a list
of my favorite songs ever, the one thing they'd all have in
common would be love at first listen.

"how do you know you won't like it before you even listen to
it?"

well hmm.. for example, if Merzbow were to release another
record, i would probably download it and listen to it at
least once. even though i know that of the hundreds of
tracks he has released i have only really liked 3 of them.
I suppose i don't know for sure that i won't like it. but it
would be a pretty good bet.

but that's why i say i try to remain objective when
listening to it anyway, so that my prejudice doesn't have
too much effect on my opinion of the new release.

im sure there are records that would grow on you, and
probably some great ones. i just think it's impossible for
anyone to like every great record on first listen...im sure
there are plenty records that need to grow on people.

I'm the same. I have never growth to love a song I
initially disliked. I have grown to appreciate a song I
initially loved more over time. But I can honestly say I
have never forced myself to listen to anything.

Probably the closest I have been to what people are
describing was the first time I heard Music Is Rotted One
Note. I was expecting some drill and instead it was
minimalist stuff. But after the first listen I was drawn
back to listen to it again. I didn't have to force myself
to listen to it.

But for some reason i listened it in bed yesterday and it's

The idm I have the hardest time getting into is the ambient
stuff. I usually have to be drunk and getting ready to go
to bed, but I usually really enjoy it then.

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2004-02-20 18:04 [#01082771]

Ambient is the genre I usually ''force'' myself to listen
to, and I never learn my lesson. Works best for me when I'm
reading or doing something else when I'm listening to it,
letting it sink in subconciously, but I always make the
mistake of focusing too much on it when I get around to that
first listen, and that doesn't work for me... I'll listen to
a rock or glitch song and devote 4 minutes of undivided
attention to it without a hitch though.

Hmm...

Music Is Rotted One Note - Squarepusher
Bitches Brew - Miles Davis
Things Fall Apart - The Roots
Radiohead - OK Computer
Industry - Dom & Roland

I dunno...there are tons more.

agreed. i personally think that ANY quality stuff requires
some kind of 'forced listening'... if i like something
instantly, then chances are that my affection won't last
long.
there must be something intriguing and challenging about the
music, something that makes me solve the puzzle and grows on
me.

Solve the puzzle?

It's like with ae...I really enjoy ae stuff because it is
fundamentally very basic. Even the most recent work is
incredibly basic, and yet people go on like it is some mad
mathmatical problem to solve.

Intriguing, yes...music has to have something that interests
you. But if you find it intreguing you aren't forcing
yourself to listen.

i don't agree that all good music should appeal to you
immediately... may of the best works are filled with
intricate details that you couldn't possibly assimilate in a
single listen... hopefully there is something about it that
does grab you immediately, but if this isn't the case, it
doesn't necessarily mean that the music doesn't warrant
another listen... many of my favourite artists/works didn't
appeal to me immediately, and the fact that i like them now
has less to do with my wanting to like them for the sake of
having something in common with some cool person who already
liked it, than it has to do with discovering things about it
that i hadn't noticed the first time...

is a place beautiful the same way every time you look at it?
no... our subjective relations with the world around us, are
intertwined with our orientation to those objects... an
orientation which is constantly changing

Well Autechre is like those magic eye pictures - a lot of it
sounds like random nonsense until you unfocus your mind just
so. Of course once you learn to hear it it's no longer a
challenge, and gets boring quickly. I used to be fanatical
about Autechre, now I think I'm done with them.

I accept that taste changes over time also. I also wasn't
saying that people shouldn't listen to an album more than
once. I was saying that the idea of forcing yourself to
listen to something was stupid.

hard to get it. Basicly with plaid i got in to IDM, and it

hard time understanding Autechre, but when i got they album
LP5, then i got in to them, and after that i have enjoyed
some of theyr other releases.

if you think something is shit, and afterwards you like it
whats so wrong? i listen to music because i like it.. thats
it

by now i even like the sound of random files loaded up as
audio... and thats no fucking music but who cares?
