Resident Evil 4 = NO ZOMBIES?!?!

There will be NO zombies in RE4. NONE.

The game is in third-person, but without stll-cinematic
shots - you can actually adjust the camera, or play it in
first person. You can also now see your health and ammo
on-screen in the game, and EVERYTHING is in-game - no
pre-rendered sequences whatsoever. No door-loading
sequences.

Now, the enemies are actual PEOPLE. People that can actually
think - if you shoot at them, they will run away, sometimes
luring you into a trap. There are some people, with burlap
sacks on their head, that will chase you with chainsaws and
try to CUT YOU IN HALF. Plus, most of the game is out in the
open.

Oh yeah, no Umbrella either. And now there are many ways to
interact with the environment - enemies will climb up
ladders after you now, and you can kick the ladders down as
they climb up - this is just one example.

The controls are still the same, but the gameplay has been
drastically altered. Shinji Mikami stepped down from his
executive position in Production Studio 4 so he could be
more creative with his staff. He said he played Resident
Evil Zero, and was completely bored with the old style. Now,
he is going for an aura of fear, realistic psychological
fear, rather than cheap shock.

And I have to wait until at least FALL to get this. I wants.
I wants it NOW.

One of the areas is completely dark, with nothing but the
light of enemy torches and occasional lightning to light
your way. Now THAT's good horror.

I thought there were lots of spectors/ghosts/ectoplasms in
that game, I saw a screenshot where Leon was being grabbed
and bitten by one. Defys the laws of physics.

Either way, that's all news to me up there. Sounds awesome,
actually.

I'm also looking forward to Resident Evil Outbreak! A more
action packed take on it... sounds spiffy. I love this
series, though I think it's always had potential to be
better than it is...

One thing I WON'T miss is the prerendered sequences. I hate
what they look like, I love using in-game engines for that
stuff. Smooth transitions, and if the engine is impressive
enough, it's a nice way to show it off and flex some
polygonal muscle. And the RE games have too many cheesy
Hollywoodesque action sequences.

Silent Hill: The Room is the big prize, though. And I really
want to check out The Suffering... looks stupid and fun.

do you mean like CGI cutscenes? preprepaired sequences that
arent the actual game engine? because I usually love
those... and if you're just talking about the game
evirnonment, well, it's ALL (pre)rendered, none of it is
actually being generated by a 3d engine in real time.. they
are more like paintings than 3d areas.

Yeah, I mean the cinematics, pre rendered. I never liked
them, they always seem jarring to me, and cheap looking.
Usually, they aren't done particularly well, and it's such a
contrast when you get back to the actual game. One recent
example that sticks out in my mind is Raindbow Six 3...
gorgeous game engine, horrible and unconvincing CGI.

I actually liked those ''painting'' backgrounds that were in
the PS1 Final Fantasys/Resident Evils, etc. They can be
wonderfully artistic. But yeah, 3D backgrounds look
basically photo realistic now anyway, that's the way to go.
When Code Veronica took RE environments to the third
dimension, I was thrilled.

Then REmake and Zero took it back to 2D! And those are two
of the best looking games ever.

Exactly, Zero has THE best rendering I have ever seen... I
love the fact that it's 2d and I dont think 3d is
necessarily an advantage in that case.

well, according to the series creator and this game's head,
Shinji Mikami, they are humans - perhaps very zombie-like
humans. but trust me, they are far more cunning than
zombies.

Yeah, those Zombie pics AREN'T from 4. Outbreak is a totally
different beast, and very interesting in its own right.
Can't wait to play that one.

I've yet to see a zombie pic from 4, so story checks out so
far.

There's another cool survival horror game coming out called
''Siren'', a Japanese themed game with, uh, zombies.
Hopefully it's better than the Fatal Frames.

yes, siren is being headed by one of the original Silent
Hill staff. sounds interesting.

but fighting actual THINKING enemies in 4? that already has
me excited. one of the things l loved about the original RE
remake for GC was how zombies would follow you - these
enemies will follow you, and trick you! wee hee hee hee!

btw, ophecks, have you played crystal chronicles yet?

also, the article i read about RE4 also said that at the
beginning of the game, they saw more enemies onscreen than
they ever had in ANY previous resident evil. sounds like
there will be an upgrade in action for this one.

but the story so far isn't too great - Leon Kennedy is
protecting the President's daughter, then she is kidnapped,
and Leon follows the trail to some rural american town.....
hmmm...

Zero was okay, and the game is gorgeous, but its main
problem was it lacked many of the cool additions that the RE
remake had - like defense items and regenerating/pursuing
zombies.

It's a decent game, but it's nowhere near the higher numbers
on my personal RE list. I do, however, at least put it above
Survivor and the very first RE (not the reamke.)

Mine's already finished, boy.

Well, except Resident Evil Survivor and Gun Heroes and
whatever blabla. Nobody cares about those offshoot games.
Outbreak is going to be the exception, though.

And now I'm starting to worry about RE4. Thinking enemies...
that's going to be really scary. I HATE being chased by
intelligent, swift enemies in those games. But I...

I... I don't know what to think.

My list-

1- Resident Evil 2
2- Resident Evil REmake
3- Resident Evil- Code Veronica
4- Resident Evil
5- Resident Evil Zero
6- Resident Evil 3

I think they're all 5 star games, though. Every one of them.

the only reason Veronica was not higher on my list was there
was not as much replay value as 2. Then again, Veronica was
a good, LONG game. I also love EVERY Resident Evil,
excluding the offshoots like Dead Aim and Survivor - FUCK
those games. I think Outbreak will be, at the very least,
highly solid.

I'm glad enemies are intelligent - it means more intelligent
fear, something that RE has lacked in comparison to other
horror games (i.e. Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill). This
could either be RE's next big evolutionary step, or it could
be at least a novel experiment for the series.

Either way, I will OWN that game the day it hits the
shelves.

no you won't. in fact, this storyline is supposedly
completely different - no Umbrella, no zombies. Basically,
the only link right now it has to previous Resident Evil
games is Leon Kennedy, the hero, who was first featured in
