derrick may on drums..

i found an interview with derrick may in which he said:

"The last thing I do is add the drums. Too many people use
drums as a piece de resistance to their music. That's dumb.
Drums are an accent. That's it. You should be able to make a
track and not even use drums. You should be able to have so
much power that you don't need drums."

i thought that was interesting. anyone have any thoughts on
this? whether or not youre a producer/musician yourself.

oh, so it's all about power is it?

Drums are far more than "just an accent" for me. But then
again, I'm not making detroit house...

Sigh. There can be A LOT of emotion in a beat.

It's an interesting point of view, but yeah... they're
definitely more than "just an accent" for me, too.

I suppose I'm a bit biased since I love playing drums -- and
as a drummer, hearing that sort of talk is so typical.

Cool interview....

May's a funny old soul sometimes...I recall this interview
on KISS from the early 90s where he went on & on about his
dislike of where Techno had gone, & how it all seemed to be
just drug music...

he's absolutely right...

i'm a drummer too, and i can really feel that... drums is
just the concept of power in a note maximized to accentuate
a note/step in a piece ..., if you can groove the fuck out
of everybody on the dancefloor with an utter percussive
bassline you don't need drums...

that is, regarding dance music of course...

i just thought it was interesting coming from a techno
producer. a lot of people would think its all about the
beats. but like e-man said, it can be all about the
bassline. the groove of drum&bass is all in the basslines -
not so much the skittering beats.. which i suppose you could
see more as punctuation.
plastikman's experiments in minimalism are as much about the
spaces between the beats a the beats themselves..
and aphex twin's icct-hedral sounds great with all the
crunchy percussion on the icarebeacauseyoudo lp - but philip
glass' orchestral reworking is just as rhythmic with no
percussion in sight.

funny when was the last time derrick may released a track?
did you know he invented DJing also? If you didnt and didnt
know what a superatar he is just ask him, he'll be the first
to tell you how important he is.

he reiterates that in this interview too. though you can
kind of see his viewpoint - it must be frustrating when the
only way people attempt to appreciate your work (which you
make+appreciate straight) when theyre twisted.

i didnt anticipate the thread being a critique of may
himself. i thought the subject matter of the quote was more
interesting than the man himself in this instance.

agreed! rhythm, theoretically, is what makes a song move.
the melody is what you hum yes, but the beat keeps
everything mathematically aligned.

i feel my beats reflect my inner angst and loneliness,
personally. beats are just an accent if you don't know how
to do them properly. i'm sure breakcore and breakbeat
producers would agree with me.

i find there are two ways i approach what i make
i try to either make everything drone (basic 4/4 beats) or
every instument solo
