I just saw Yojimbo for the first time today, and it was so
fucking awesome. Well-directed, great acting, well-written -
it stands up quite well to this day. Can anyone recommend
other films of his?

i haven't seen all of it yet, but Throne of Blood looked
amazing...

as for some of his other samurai films, Hidden Fortress is
decent, Seven Samurai is pretty nice, Rashomon is okay,
Kagemusha is a really interesting colour film he did later
on...

Will definitely check out Seven Samurai.

Zephyr Twin - his films are at least 30 years or more old,
but they are DAMNED good. :D

basicly from 50's ( seven samurai ) tp 80's
after searching info's years ago i came to this :
Akira is cool

its probably the best site for his fans. complete.

i watched all of his films - some i have, some no. I
recomend Throne of Blood ( based on Makbet ) and Ran and ,
of course, Seven Samurai- poetry !

the way he builds up tension before a fight totally pumps
you up for it, even though it may last just a few seconds.
But it's because of that tension he builds that makes those
few seconds all the more worthwhile. Doesn't he have a
trilogy of films on a single story as well?

offline hyakusen from 8=============> on 2004-02-14 16:49 [#01073456]

Ran is also based on some shaekspire novel ( cant remember
which one - the one about brothers fighting for land )

and its better to watch them non-coloured. Black&white gives
the films real feeling,
there are coloured versions of the films, also good, but not
black&white anymore.

i agree - i was watching Yojimbo in black and white, and it
was very good. I don't think i could take it in color.

hes was writing scripts coz he was influenced by our "west
culture. Funny how one man from such interesting country
could be more interested in our lands than in his owns.
To be precise, some of characters are real people from past,
and mostly histories are puted in real historical periods -
e.g Yojimbo - the time of the action in film is the time of
the war between shogun and some land lords, and, whats more
funny, the character of Yojimbo is almost the same like real
samurai Yojimbo from that time ( a samurai who served to Oda
Nobunaga ):)

i took Ran in colour - diferent film i must say...you can
stiil feel Kurosawa's spirit, but all these live
colours....nah, not for me.

Ran is based on King Lear...

well, that's not too odd - look at anime like Cowboy Bebop
and Trigun, those are obviously influenced by Western
culture.

In a way, Samurai films are the Westerns of Japanese
society.

really? now i have to see that too, then. the concept alone
already makes the movie worthwhile.

dead : correct.

and right - westerns for japanese :))))
shame he's dead, but Ume Agaru is nice, its based on his
script, he died before he started to make the film. But its
good

Kurosawa is very much a synthesis of western and eastern
film concepts... if you're looking for a more
"japanese-centric" filmmaker, you might want to check the
films of someone like Kenji Mizoguchi... i wouldn't say that
there's anything wrong with Kurosawa's approach, it's just
different from what a lot of the other classic japanese
filmmakers were doing at the time...

i think that's what set him apart from the pack, though. :D

well from the japanese pack yes... from the world pack...
not so much... i find myself re-evaluating my position on a
lot of Kurosawa films lately... i used to really love him...
but upon second viewings, some films i really appreciate,
and some films seem to be somewhat overrated, and overshadow
a lot of great japanese filmmaking that deserves more
attention than it gets... there are a fuckload of fantastic
japanese films/filmmakers...

also check out "high and low"

it's a great kidnapping/police investigation movie, i
believe he made it in the 70s.

it was lucky enough to see several of his films when the
local art theatre played a festival. restored prints of
roshamon, high and low, throne of blood and ikiru

intereting fact: 'seven samurai' inspired the american
western 'the magnificent seven', which went on to inspire
sergio leone to start making his own style of westerns
(spaghetti westerns). the first one he did? 'fistful of
dollars', the first in the trilogy of 'for a few dollars
more' and 'the good, the bad and the ugly', which was based
on kurosawa's 'yojimbo'.

so: an asian filmmaker inspires and american filmmaker who
in turn inspires a euorpean filmmaker, each film pushing the
boundaries of its respected genre

and a bug's life was also loosely based on the
magnificent seven
.

i've only seen seven samurai and ran so
far. i really want to get rashomon soon, too.
toshiro mifune is such a great actor to watch.

Kurosawa is the man, if only he was alive to show up these
bruckheimer type fags with their lame ass over used
explosions and what not

and toshiro mifune is up there with clint eastwood

kurosawa is one of my favorite directors! i have a bunch of
his dvds.

if you liked yojimbo, the companion film is Sanjuro, which
is more light-hearted than the first. my other favorites -
seven samurai, ran, throne of blood, rashomon (i really
appreciated it a lot more on the second viewing), high and
low...

dreams was interesting, but much different from his other
films. i didn't particularly get into that one. hidden
fortress is another popular one, but not one of my favorites
either.

kurosawa on imdb

rashomon is not 'really' a samurai film so much I think, its
more cerebral or something, so don't rent that thinking
you're gonna get a fountain of jugular blood

that's certainly true, but as with most of his films, it's a
classic.

i'd say mifune was a much better actor than clint eastwood.

yeah, the funny thing is, though, that mifune was a soldier
in WWII Japan, and he was originally given a minor role by
Kurasawa in a film, but Kurasawa liked him so much that he
started using him as a leading man.

He died on Christmas Day in 1997. :(

The Life Of Oharu just came out on DVD here by Kenji
Mizoguchi, from looking at reviews on the net it's extremely
highly rated, some even say one of the best films ever made,
can't wait to see it. Never even heard of the director
before, what other Japanese directors are regarded as being
there best? Older directors, i know most of the newer ones.
